The Rio Karma, when it was first released it was advertised in magazines such as "Stuff" as "THE IPOD KILLER!"

i myself not being an apple fan at the time jumped at the opportunity to sieze such a unique object which was the only 20gb mp3 player out at the time other than the ipod...

The look is a bit, 'funky' to say the least and it definitely gets a few looks which are maybe not all that good but that's the beauty of this player.

Blue backlight, Red Main Button and a Black/Grey Exterior. It truly is beautiful in it's own right. The Rio may not look as sleek as an ipod, as shiny or even as Smooth Shaped but it's Curvy and unique.

I have owned 2 of these mp3 players over the course of maybe 2 years aswell as my sister buying one due to my recommendation. The only grudge against the Karma is the fact that out of the 3 in my household, 2 have broke the wheel button within a month of two or having it. I dont think it was due to force but just badly implemented within the player. The wheel isn't a major hinderance with or without it but it is used to scroll alot quicker for those who have alot of different bands and songs on the mp3 player. The red button works just as fine as a backup but can be slightly annoying at times as it takes longer.

The size of this product is pretty much a big issue. It's nothing compared to some of the players we see today and this has been out for over 2 years! it is alot smaller than it's 'Elio' and 'Creative Zen' Cousins... It fits in almost any pocket without the worry of it coming out due to it's shape or just "Sliding" out your pocket without your noticing because it wont...

The software is easy to use and lading songs onto the player couldn't be easier. "Rio Music Manager" and "Rio Taxi" allow you to use the player as it is meant and either or aswell as a portable Hard Drive on which you can transfer files onto it and from computers. Rio DJ which is accompanied with the product is an amazing piece of software and a must-have.

The Playlist editing is nice and simple, and unlike the iPod, can be named, edited and even deleted/created on the player itself stand-alone. The playlist is easy to make and has never been a problem with prompts all the way through the creation process.

The beautiful thing about the Rio is it has a large set of screen choices afor Display. You can have the backlight setting anywhere between 5seconds and 5 minutes with an auto-standby at periods of inactivity... The display of the songs can be manipulated so you can have how much time is left on a song, an album, all songs, all artists or just the playlist length. The visual counter can let you see how long is left per song, or count up and how much has elapsed or even if you like being a bit different, You can have VU Meters. This is a kool little gadget thing to watch and gets alot of 'ooh aah's' from watchers...

The sound quality is amazing and the headphones you get are nothing short of great. The black headphones save you from getting beaten up and mugged for your expensive mp3 player and they are Sennheiser which just means quality full stop.

They have never broken, my headphones and they just keep going, really loud or really quiet, they wont break and they'll go forever...

The rio comes preloaded with several songs aswell, with a bit of Alternative, Rap and some Indie to keep most satisfied. The bands are Augean Stables, Revolverlution, and a rapper which slips my mind. The songs are almost unknown to many although they are really good and i haven't deleted them from my rio, they really are worth a listen.

The rio allows several file formats the ipod doesn't which just is a kick in the teeth for apple with the Rio honing the power of Ogg Vorbis (.ogg) Files whose quality is almost unsurpassed against an .mp3 file.

You techies will love the fact the rio has a EQ system unlike the ipod where you can use bass settings or completely arrange it yourself. The 5 Channel Equaliser allows you to set every setting yourself for optimum listening, it takes no time and if it goes wrong, Default settings can be kicked in causing no dismay.

The rio breaks sometimes and i'll admit it's annoying but a quick hold on the ON/OFF Button and it'll turn itself back on and off in no time. it is rare to jam but it does sometimes and it's not a problem, just a slight waste of time.

The Rio is a completely different mp3 player to the ipod and stands out from the crowd, the blue backlight, the red button, the side scroll button and its funky looks make it a perfect present for anyone who wants a cheap 20gb mp3 player, that's different.

I would suggest it to anyone and i still use mine aswell as a 60gb Video iPod despite it being 'old and outdated'... Wrong.
The rio still rocks and i take it everywhere almost.

so in conclusion,
Take a break from everyday boring life and get a Rio, There worth it.

A solid player
Review of Rio Karma 20 20 GB by zim2411

Advantages: A true audiophile's player
Disadvantages: It's rather out dated by today's standards

The Rio Karma is a solid, high quality digital audio player (DAP). It features MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, and WMA playback. Ogg and FLAC are the formats of choice for myself. FLAC is lossless audio, while Ogg is basically a much more advanced version of MP3, which also allows gapless playback, something the Karma excels at. The Karma's menu system is intuitive and easy to use thanks to it's scroll wheel and center joystick. You have several ways to ...
...you thanks to the included Rio DJ software. The Karma has a customizable 5 band equalizer, which allows for great control over how your headphones sound. You can even edit playlists on the fly. In my experience, the Karma has proven itself as a sturdy well built player. It has withstood much abuse and runs smoothly to this day. Output quality is fantastic, paired with a pair of Etymotic ER6i canalphones. Highly reccomended, and you can probably ... Read review

Rio Karma 20Gb, its ok........
Review of Rio Karma 20 MP3 Player (20 GB) by  jay2020

Advantages: small, 20Gb, good quality sound, charging/transer Pod
Disadvantages: Basic Menus, heavy, sensitive to shock

...I have been waiting a few months to get a Karma. The sheer size of the item compared to the capacity is fanstastic. Fits in the palm of your hand and neatly conseals in an inside pocket! There are nice Stennhieser headphones providing good quality sound and as they are black no one targets you specifically for the trendy iPod! Also the battery life is very good and its hard to drain it out entirely, have the charging pod is great as you just dropit in there and its charging away and connected up! The charging pod is cool, had phono connections for direct link to HiFi with very good quality output, almost time for bye bye CD player! The pod also charges the Karma and contains USB 2.0 and Ethernet connections. Data transfer is pretty good, and the unit had store other data files as well as Mp3. With the network capacity XP Sp2... A decent attempt to over-throw the iPod
Review of Rio Karma 20 MP3 Player (20 GB) by  Vicster1784

Advantages: Nice design, easy to use, decent battery life
Disadvantages: Doesn't have the status or wow-factor of the iPod, colour may be a put-off

...as create easy on-the-go playlists. I nice feature is the ability to save those lists on the go and rename them, which is a head above what the iPod offers. Along with the standard shuffle and repeat functions and a user-friendly equalizer a nice bonus was a crossfader, which bizarlly is not included in any other device I’ve seen so far. Rio DJ has to be one of the coolest features to be brought into the MP3 player marker since it analyses your playback data, complies an auto-playslit and then plays it back crossfading the tracks. The best an iPod can offer is the auto playlist function, but that is not even in the same league. For syncing your music Karma comes bundled with Rio Music Manager 2.0 which is easy enough to use and supports ripping CDs and converting into an array of supported formats, which include Ogg Vorbis and FLAC, as well as MP... All is a lot karma now
Review of Rio Karma 20 MP3 Player (20 GB) by  carguy143

Advantages: Great sound quality, small size, ease of use
Disadvantages: weight

...When i was after a new mp3 player, i was (like most people) looking at the iPod. But then i was leant a Rio Karma, my mind was soon changed.... The sound quality is excellent, with rich, deep bass, and brilliant high frequency sound too. this player has hardly any sound distortion when being used at high volume. The 5 band graphic equalizer allows the user to completely customise the sound to a setting that suits them. The karma also doesn't suffer from the "flutter" effect when using low bitrate audio files. The karma is priced at slightly less than the iPod mini. I paid £175 for my karma, and the iPod mini is about £20-30 more expensive. The karma also has 20GB of storage capacity, whereas the iPod mini has only got 5GB. The karma clearly is much better value for your money. The karma is also smaller than the equivalent 20GB i... Read review
