Roaccutane, the brand name for isotretinoin tablets, is definitely not available for purchase over the counter or for supervised purchase in the UK. In the UK, oral isotretinoin can only be prescribed by a hospital consultant and can only be supplied by specified retail pharmacies (usually only hospital pharmacies).
Roaccutane is very effective for acne, but is never used as a "first line" treatment for a number of reasons. It does have a serious potential side effects and is very expensive.
Isotretinoin is also available for topical (ie applied to the skin) use in a number of compound (ie mixed) preparations, such as Isotrex, which may prescribed by GP's, but still do not form first line treatments.

Hi Markedward, I'm Jennifer, Health & Beauty Category Manager at Ciao. I've moved Roaccutane to a Prescription Medicine under Medicine now as I was alerted of the fact this morning. Regards, Jennifer

I totally agree with you. Although when I actually suggested the product, having used it myself, the only category that the team at Ciao could put it in was OTC. As long as you have a prescription, you can get it OTC, but only at a hospital with a registered pharmacist present.
Advantages: Tells you that doctors dont do all that much, for all the money they make. Disadvantages: You can't expect much from a doctor, except taking your money.
