I bought a road angel navigator 6000 a little over a year ago now, i got it second hand for £50 as it had no sd card that contain the maps included, i was quite happy as my friend had one of these with the sd card so i figured i could just make a copy of his card, insert it and away i go. This is what i did and hey presto off we go no problem at all.
To be honest i don't actually find the 6000 to bad although i notice a few people have come up with some horror stories regards the software not giving them the correct information.
Its a simple basic machine that does what it says it does. I have used it on several occassions when travelling round glasgow, edinburgh and birmingham and find it to be of satisfactory use. Ok so there are a few bad points to it but you almost come to expect this with everything in this day and age.
The in-built
speed camera safety warning can be a little annoying when travelling through an average speed limit area but you can easily mute the audible warning at a press of a button. I use the software update online every time i go to use the 6000 on a long journey and it is pretty accurate with things like average speed cameras along stretches of roadworks. The only point i have found wrong so far was the average speed cameras speed limit on the stretch of road leading to prestwick international airport but the road is that well sign posted with the correct speed limit that it is not much of a concern as the 6000 was telling me it was a 40mph limit when it was a 50mph limit so no big problem.
It also has a blackspot database built in which warns you in plenty of time of areas on roads where accidents are more prone to occur due to an up to date list installed of frequent crash/accident spots on major roads
If you take a wrong turn with the navigation it does rethink the best route to get you where you are going from where you are. the processor is not as fast as some now but it takes a matter of probably 15 seconds to re-calculate your journey dependant on the signal strength. it sometimes does not take you the most direct route or the quickest but if you don't know where you are and just follow its instructions it will get you there and its never a big detour if any.( i have only found this happen to me maybe twice when i tested it out in town)
Ok so i live in Inverness in the highlands of scotland and to be honest don't really need it for up here but i guess plenty of you will if you will if you travel up for a break away, you will find that a lot of new roads in town simply don't exist on the map but in all honesty it's because they probably barely have had the road tarmac'd yet and if they have it's probably not set. as for main roads and i would say 95% of the roads in the highlands they are there and accurate.
The biggest problem i have with this machine is the ease of plotting an address or road you wish to go to. It has the option to put in a postal code but unlike the majority of sat nav's available it does not any post codes of roads in towns and cities for example say IV1 1DE which if i remember correctly is Castle street in inverness, if you enter this it will go as far as IV1 1 and then give you an area list of inverness and then you have to type in the road name from there, lets just hope you know exactly how to spell it. No offense meant but can you spell the road names in Wales??? i cant even spell half the towns, it can be the same up here with the gaelic names.
Other than this i find the 6000 to be a neat compact little machine that proves usefull on long journeys also handy if your speedo is malfunctioning as it picks up an accurate speed you are travelling at from the satellites and tells you on screen.
It has the ability to display photo's and play mp3's you have stored on the memory card but to be honest i have never used this as it does not interest me.
The machine itself is neat and compact measuring somewhere around 3"x4" in size and light enough to use handheld and keep in your pocket.
The battery life is not too bad i would expect around 6-8 hours of use on battery power from a full charge as long as you dont have the screen backlit permanently.
The machine is chargeable via a small usb connector on the side that you can also use to update the software (maps etc) online should you need to. i have found that some of the motorola chargers are compatible for using as a car charger for example the motorola l3 charger is a perfect companion
All in all i find that the road angel navigator 6000 is a good buy if you are not interested in having the most modern and up to date GPS system available and it does the job just as good as many others that are newer and aparently improved!
