At about three hundred notes, the road angel Navigator 7000 boasts 7 digit postcode search, UK street level mapping, major European routes, automatic route calculation, automatic (hazard) updates via blue tooth or USB and turn by turn voice and visual prompts. According to the packaging, you can take this thing out of its box, wack it in your car and bingo you're off, it's THAT user friendly.
It feels heavy enough to have substance, but not so heavy it's cumbersome and looks alright I guess if you're into that sort of thing. The touch screen is responsive and can be operated with your finger or the provided plastic stylus. The cradle easily and sturdily suckers onto your windscreen and can be adjusted for comfort, it's not rocket science though is it? Manufacturing a cradle that does its job.
After some messing about the operation of this thing is relatively straight forward, though takes at least 30 seconds to fire up. The initial screen tells you to register it else receive no updates. That is, updates to the location of speed cameras, black spots etc. This is free for the first six months and then costs you £4.99 per month; updates come via your PC or your blue tooth enabled mobile phone.
The display isn't as sexy as Tom-Tom's but you get used to that, what is hard to get used to are the ludicrous voice instructions. You can kind of see where it wants you to go by the blue line creeping up the map but, the voice says 'at the first opportunity turn left' even though there are loads of left turns before the one the line & common sense dictate you turn into. Also, it treats sharp bends like junctions and tells you to turn left or right into the same. I don't know about anywhere else but the map is also out of date, in my city on the same day, twice it instructed me to turn right at a junction where no right turn was permitted. On my way to work it directed me to the back of bloody beyond diverting me from my usual simple, quick route through bloody god knows where; I think I ran a hobbit over at one point before doing a u-turn and relying on time honoured habit. The display seems to keep changing of its own accord which can be a bit confusing as well.
The alert feature seems to do it's job, it lets you know whenever you're approaching a speed camera or black spot with this bizarre whistle that repeats and irritates in equal measure; there is no way, as far as I can see, of disabling or changing this noise. However, this is unarguably a useful facet of this gadget.

Advantages: its compact design Disadvantages: It doesnt work
...was initially drawn to the road angel by its compact design and it appeared quite easy to use, however in practice it is utterly hopeless, the mapping is out of date , very jerky when the car is moving slowly, It will take you on the most outlandish routes to the point where you are definitely better off with a map. I would estimate that it has cost me almost its value in wasted fuel in the last six months,
As for the alerts-yes they work and are ... ...due to heat reflective windscreens, road angel supplied me this item for free after much complaining, however the tom tom I had previously worked fine without an aerial in both of my cars,
I am utterly fed up with mine and now barely use it, I would love my old tom tom back (it was stolen) do yourselves a favour and stay well clear of this one, I wish I had ...

Advantages: Camera database is good Disadvantages: Everything else poor
Having used Road Angel camera devices for a few years, when I needed a new navigation unit I thought this would be a good choice. Wrong... The camera warnings are spot on but the navigation is appauling. I have used Tomtom, Garmin, VDO Dayton and Navman before but the RA 7000 is awful. Wildly inaccurate routes, buggy and the sound and voice just wound me up. Updates via Bluetooth phone, yes if you have one of about 10 compatible phones - so Bluetooth ... ...have come close to launching it out of the window, now have purchased another Tomtom which works great so the RA 7000 is history - just a shame I had it 3 months so it's too late to get a refund. Enjoy my wasted £199 Road Angel Group! ...

Advantages: Speed camera warnings Disadvantages: over-complicated and not intuitive, poor battery, poor graphics, not good value
...to be far superior to Road Angel. I recently changed jobs and the Road Angel came with the car and not wishing to be negative I have given it as thorough a testing as possible and positively worn the instructions to parchment. In summary it is not intuitive, the battery life is poor and gives 'battery critically low' notices after 2.5 hours and there is no option to choose 'written details' of the planned route. I have averaged 45k miles per annum ... ...I had made a quantum leap from road maps; using the Road Angel after Tom Tom feels like I am going backwards again as I keep having to refer to the AA Atlas ! I will be speaking to the boss tomorrow and putting in a request for a replacement ...

Advantages: Size, battery life, camera alerts. Disadvantages: a bit slow to aquire the satellite, voice alerts sometimes misleading.
I have an RA7000, unlike the previous reviewer I have found the written waypoints list, I haven't read the instructions much (tap the centre bar below the map).
The battery life is better than most competitors - they all die in 1-2hrs if you disable the screensaver. I have TomTom on my company Ipaq and would say both systems are equal. TomTom has smoother map scrolling, but RA is much more comprehensive when it comes to cameras.
With the optional ...

Advantages: Alerts for speed cameras Disadvantages: Rotton graphics, poor sound, bad battery
...date. Unfortunately I chose a Road Angel 7000.
It is rubbish. It showed the wrong location the first time I put a post code in , takes often 35 minutes to find a satellite and then the battery goes 25 minutes later. The graphics are crude and the sound quality is just terrible. The speed camera bit works well enough although you pick up a lot of false alarms when passing roads over a motorway as it does not know seem to that the device is not on ...
