Early in this Inspector Wexford adventure, a young woman who was bound and gagged during a robbery demands victim counselling; not long after, families of some people taken hostage quickly cluster themselves into a support group. The titular "road rage" is equally timely and politically correct: protestors have gathered from around the world to stop, by whatever means they can, a new motorway that will cut through some of the woods surrounding Wexford's fictional but endearing village of Kingsmarkham.

...their opposition to the new road known. But when Wexford's wife, along with four other hostages, is kidnapped by Sacred Globe, a group violently opposed to the bypass.... Seemed promising! I have always found that Ruth Rendell's opening lines make me want to read more. Her characters are well crafted and you can get a sense of realism that many authors fail to achieve. This time though the book concentrates more on the feelings of Inspector Wexford ... ...side plots did not blend together into a seamless whole and it was hard to link the different plots together. There are times when the book is very tense but mostly it lacked the energy to keep you enthralled. I felt I wanted to get to the end of the book to see how it all fitted together but was left with a disappointing "Oh is that it?". Not oneof her best. ...

Advantages: Amazing story, kept me guessing! Disadvantages: none
I've just finished my first year of higher exams, and one of these exams was English. For part of the course i have to choose a book and write over 1500 words on certain aspects of it. As you can imagine i really had to get a book that would give plenty to write about, and am certainly glad i chose this one.
The story is based on a campaign to stop a forest being knocked down to build a motorway, and people end up being killed and/or kidnapped in ... ...of the story is i haven't yet found out whether the forest stayed or not.
I'll not give the story away as i reckon you should all buy it. I can say though that you'll be left guessing like i did. Don't be put off by the first chapter or so of the story as it certainly does get better.
Also as i was studying the book i had to read it several times over, and it certainly didn't feel like a chore. ...

Advantages: A nice easy read. Disadvantages: Not very exciting
I enjoyed watching the Inspector Wexford mysteries on TV, so when I found this book while rummaging through the charity shops, I thought I would give Ruth Rendell a try.
A new bypass is planned for the town of Kingsmarkham and before the work begins various environmental and protest groups make their way to the local area. While some badger movers are attempting to relocate the badger population they find the body of German hitchhiker Ulrike Ranke. ... ...have to release him for lack of evidence. Mike Burden is convinced they had the right man but Reg Wexford is equally as convinced they don't. Before they carry out any more investigation into this murder some people start disappearing from around Kingsmarkham. The disappearances turn out to be the work of a previously unheard of environmental group called Sacred Globe. They have taken five hostages and threaten to kill them unless the new bypass ...
