I bought Roberts Gemini RD3 (my first DAB Digital Radio) to add to the growing collection of Roberts Radios in my house. I generally ADORE Roberts Radios - their sound quality, build quality, features and reliability have always really impressed me.
However, I have to say the Roberts Gemini RD3 was a bit of a disappointment.
Its main good points are the typical Roberts Build Quality & Looks, and its EXCELLENT sound quality when it comes to playing pop music; it has no problem belting out the bass!
However, I found a number of quirks with the radio which have left me rather indifferent towards it. Maybe I'm too fussy, but my main gripes.....
There is a curious distortion (like a harsh gravelly tone) when listening to mens voices on the DAB Tuner - a real pain when listening to Radio 4 and other speech-based stations; however, this may be a quirk of DAB in general rather than the Radio itself.
Sound Levels on the DAB Digital Tuner seem to vary - however, again this may be a quirk of DAB in general rather than the Radio itself.
There is no Clock, Alarm Clock or "Automatic Switch Off" feature - which means it is virtually useless as a bedside radio!
The internal mains adapter makes an unusually loud 'hummmmm' when connected to the mains!!
To summarise - the Roberts RD3 may be the latest technology & may have cost £140, but I still prefer to use my trusty old Roberts R9906 Analogue model costing £50 !!!!
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Welcome to Ciao! Im tied between a somewhat helpful and a helpful rating here - you gave good insight to the features this machine has but then go onto say that it wouldnt make a good bedside radio - so what is it then? A radio or a bedside radio? Im aware Roberts make a few bedside radios - I nearly bought one but it wasnt DAB.
The Roberts Gemini 55 is a portable DAB/FM radio with pause and rewind functions, an SD ... more
card slot for recording and MP3 playback, a USB socket for connecting to a computer, stereo line in and out sockets and an incredibly compact design. A stunning feature count for such a discreetly styled radio.
