parts is the story of an artist named Thomas Hudson living on an island in the Gulf stream call Bimini, Bimini is the the name of this first part. It follows the five weeks that his children come to stay with him in the holidays; they live with their mothers the rest of the time.
The second part is called Cuba. Set at the time of the second world war, still the story of Thomas Hudson the artist, he has just found out that his only son has been killed. He is older, more cynical and introverted and spends his time drinking heavily on the island, and doing naval reconnaissance for the US Army.
At Sea is the last part. This part is about Hudsons and his shipmates pursuit of a damaged German ship off the Gulf stream, after they find a village that the germans massacred on their way back to Germany.
