My son is three years old, and he absolutely insists on drinking all the time. I don't mind giving him things like water, etc - but sometimes he gets bored and wants some variety. But that does not mean I am going to indulge in giving him high sugar drinks with enough E numbers to send Gordon Brown and his Cabinet climbing the walls of Parliament (though it does create a funny image in my head!)
As a parent I need to look very carefully at anything we give to our son - does it have E numbers, if so how many? Does it have alot of sugar? Will it send my child hyperactive. Is it thirst quenching enough? It's enough to drive a person insane for such a simple thing as what drink to give your child! I have found everything involving a child requires military planning, and patience for reading the small print is a must.
Shoot away please Ma'am
I want to say I discovered Fruit Shoots about a year ago, but it's the wrong word to use as everyone knows what a Fruit Shoot is. Our house only discovered them about June last year. Prior to that my son, who is 3, had always had very weak cordial and water drinks, milk or Fennel tea. But one day we were out for the day and we forgot drink for him. So my fiance went into the nearest shop and purchased a drink. That drink happened to be a Blackcurrant and Apple Fruit Shoot. This is where the story began.
Appearance
A standard sized fruit shoot is 200ml. It is a short, stubby bottle with a bottle top that pulls up when drinking, and you can push down to prevent leakage, It is a coloured plastic bottle, with the colour of the bottle denoting the flavour:
- Dark Purple for Blackcurrant and Apple flavour
- Orange for Orange and Peach flavour
- Yellow for Tropical Fruit flavour
- Green for Apple Flavour
- Red for Strawberry flavour
There is a range of H2O Fruit Shoots - but that is a different product entirely, so I will only talk about the main Fruit Shoot line in this review.
Availability
Fruit Shoots are widely available in many stores within the United Kingdom. They are the most popular childrens drinks available in the UK market currently, so many shops stock them. Examples of shops you can buy them at are:
- Tesco
- Sainsburys
- Morrisons
- Asda
- Superdrugs
Pricing
You can buy Fruit Shoots individually, but you can also buy them in mutlipacks of 4 or 8 bottles. You must note that each mutlipack only contains one flavour -it does not mix or match, I personally always find the multipacks of 8 to be the cheapest to buy, as the price per bottle reduces depending on the size of the multipack you buy. Also, I find alot of Supermarkets do multi buy specials on the 4 and 8 packs. The average price of Fruit Shoots are as follows:
- Single Fruit Shoot is approximately 65 pence to £1.00, depending on where you shop
- Multipack of 4 Fruit Shoots is approximately £1.31
- Multipack of 8 is approximately £2.44
Please note that the above prices are for the 200ml bottles -you can also buy 300ml bottles as well, and these are slightly more expensive - I would probably add about 40p to each multipack for the larger sized bottles.
Nutritional Information
I don;t know about yourselves, but I am mega nutrition conscious when it comes to what my son eats and drinks. I don't want to pump him full of products that are bad for him -as in high in fat, or high in sugar with lots of E numbers. I pay close attention to the nutritional details, and will only give him what I am comfortable with.
The Robinson Fruit Shoots can be purchased either as a standard Fruit Shoot, or as No added sugar variety. The same flavours and sizes are available in each range, but obviously the No added sugar range is better for your child. However, the Tropical flavour only comes in the No Added Sugar variety. This is also the range I give my son. When comparing the nutritional values of a regular and No added Sugar range, it is a large difference. Many nutritionalists advise reducing sugar content for children, especially as most young children still have their baby teeth - too much sugar can cause cavities and gum problems, which can hinder a childs teeth development.

Overall this is a good drink to give your children when you consider Nutritional factors. The No Added Sugar range is low in sugar and contains only a trace of sodium. However, it does contain artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame, and includes some colourings and additives. But when you compare it to other products that it competes with, it is certainly one of the better options.
Competition
There are a wide variety of childrens soft drinks that you can buy on the market now. These include drinks such as Coca Cola, Pepsi, Ribena, Calypso and Vimto. Robinsons Fruit Shoots have been found to be one of the best soft drinks on the market with a high fruit content (about 11%). They are also competitively priced.
Taste Test
From a three year olds perspective, my son absolutely loves the complete range of the Fruit Shoots. His favourite flavour is the No Added Sugar Strawberry flavour, so we tend to buy the multipacks of 8. But for this review I have chosen to take the plunge and drink a bottle myself!
The Strawberry Fruit Shoot does most certainly taste of Strawberries. It is quite a strong smelling drink with a fairly sweet taste. I can taste a subtle edge to it in my mouth -as I have sweeteners in my tea and coffee, I can tell this taste is the artificial sweeteners. To me this drink is far too artificial tasting, but I do have to admit that it's not bad compared to others I have tried. It also seems quite thirst quenching, and a 200ml bottle left me satisified. I also found that there was no lingering taste in my mouth after a few seconds had passed and the sweetener taste went away. If you want your child to have a more subtler flavoured drink, then this may not be the product for them. What I will say though, is that the apple flavour is by far the best in my opinion. It does nto have that artificial sweetener taste, and has a refreshing apple tang to it, that is much more yummy.
Conclusion:
The Fruit Shoot range is certainly a range that I would recommend to anyone, especially parents. The range of flavours means you can mix and match depending on your childs mood. You can also be safe in the knowledge that you can give your child drinks with no added sugar in, and also drinks that are containing at least 11% fruit. This is much higher than many childrens drinks available on the market.
The price is also reasonable, with many multideals available in the larger Supermarkets. Also it is a great drink for convenience, as you can purchase it in most shops and supermarkets wherever you are in the United Kingdom.
The bottles are also a handy size to pack into a handbag or a changing bag when you are planning a day out. With the no spill grip, you can ensure that if you close the lid properly, there should be no unforseen spills and accidents.
For parents who have a Blue Peter love inside them, then these bottles are also the perfect shape and size for making a rocker/space ship with your child. Once a bottle is empty in our house I rinse the bottle out, then replace the lid. Using a knife I score a line on either side of the bottle. Then I get my son to colour in two cardboard wings. We then slot these into the scored lines and decorate the bottle with stars and stickers. Suddenly your bottle becomes a rocket -which is great for imaginative play with your child.
There are also other ranges available from the Robinsons Fruit Shoot Range -these include the Fruit Shoot H2O variety and the Fruit Shoot 100% Fruit drinks.
Advantages: Bottle is good Disadvantages: Dirty cap, disgusting taste.
...decided that a bottle of Robinsons Fruit Shoot in blackcurrant and apple flavour and with no added sugar and added vitamins, sounded like an interesting and reasonably healthy-looking alternative.
Fruit shoots are very interestingly-packaged in a small "sports" style bottle with the flip-up and down nozzle that you suck the drink out of and can close again if you want to save some for later.
Anyway, I pulled off the clear plastic cap covering the ... ...sealed over the nozzle, the white nozzle part that you suck the drink from was slightly grimy, with some greyish marks on it- not very hygienic looking and obviously caused at the factory as the plastic seal over the nozzle would have prevented it getting soiled after it left the factory.
Still, it didn't look too serious so I carefully wiped it down and took a drink- and nearly spat it right out again. This stuff is disgusting- sickly-sweeet, stale-tasting ...

Robinson's Fruit Shoot
**************************
My parents keep buying these and I'm beginning to worry. They're not for me, of course, but it worries me that these funky coloured bottles are not only appealing to young children who like to take them in their cool trendy lunchboxes, but they're also seducing my parents into thinking that they are still buying a healthy fruit juice drink.
I guess they're not that bad, but looking at the ingredients, ... ...been approved and appointed to HM Queen Elizabeth II, Robinson's could have done better. The first thing on the ingredients' list is 'water' - fruit juice that gets diluted like this is nothing short of sub-standard. 'Fruit juices from concentrate' is the second on the list and the third; 'sugar' - a whopping 24g in the little 200ml bottle. Not a good sign.
This has all been distracted by 'no artificial sweetners, no artificial colours and flavours, ...

**Warning **
Children could choke on the small parts so be careful. I have to agree with this warning because I do think those little plastic bits on the top before you get to the spout are a real danger if they are inhaled or swallowed. It's a bit of a strange one when they market these drinks for children and produce them with a choking hazard.

, you are given two warnings;
1) Not suitable for children under 36 months due to the cap being a choking hazard.
2) Because of hygiene reasons, do not refill the bottle.
And then there's my own special warning;
1) Watch your tongue on the white cap - it nips loads if you get it jammed!

A new product review is a little overdue so after finding myself with a spare hour and raiding my cupboards I've come across.....
A four pack of the new RobinsonsFruit Sh2oot, which cost me £1.90 for two packs in my local Co-Op yesterday afternoon. These were on offer and equate to £0.24 per bottle, a bargain I think. The individual bottles of this size can sell for as much as £0.75 in some shops.
~~~~~So, what is it?~~~~~
These differ enormously from the usual FruitShoots which are essentially quite a strong cordial (one which I always dilute by half before giving to my daughter, spoilsport I know).
The new Fruit Sh2oots are described as a still spring water drink with a natural blackcurrant flavour. The logo kinda gives it away as the Fruit Sh2oot text is mainly white with the h2o picked out in blue to make it stand ...
the difference and refuse to drink, I have even tried making them go without for a while but nothing seemed to work.
I was walking around Tesco doing the weekly shop when my three year old pointed at some drinks and asked for one, seeing as we had been out for the past three hours I bought a pack of 4 FruitShoot H2O for £1.69p and gave him one. He popped off the lid on the bottle and pulled up the little lid and drank the lot in double quick time. When I got home I looked at the bottles and noticed that they were 99.4% spring water and what a shock the other kids had seen them and wanted a bottle as well so I gave them out and they were gone in no time at all. My teen son even asked if we could buy them for him for his school packed lunch. BINGO I had cracked it not pure water but as close to it as I was going to get, he has now been taking them ...
