"Rocky 2"

Director: Sylvester Stallone
Producers: Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler
Writer: Sylvester Stallone
Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, Burgess Meredith and Tony Burton

Released in 1979, 3 years after the original, this 2 hour sequel see the two warring fighters in a grudge rematch to satisfy more than there own curiosity.

With Apollo Creed, (played by Carl Weathers) being barracked for the humiliating fight against Rocky Balboa, (played by Sylvester Stallone), he demands a rematch to prove he is the true champion. Unfortunately, Rocky refuses and decides to retire from boxing for good.

With his earning from the fight his luck begins to change, including his marriage to Adrian Pennino, (played by Takia Shire) and buying his first ever brand new car.

To stay clear of the ring Rocky decides to try his hand at advertising using his 'Italian Stallion' status to do so, but his punch drunk attitude and his lack of reading abilities soon put an end to this choice of career.

With Apollo under pressure from his fans and Rocky under pressure trying to find work, now that Adrian is pregnant it is not too long before the rematch is organised and a date is set.

Then, (as in the first movie) Apollos' is trained by Tony Evers, (played by Tony Burton) and Rocky is trained by the aging Mickey Goldmill, (played by Burgess Meredith) the fight is on.

In a bit of a twist and to aid Rocky to win, Mickey decides to train him in a totally different way, confusing the over confident Apollo through out the fight.
But with Adrian not happy about the fight it begins to have a terrible effect on the challengers mind as he trains.

Another frightening twist of fate interrupts Rocky's training, threatening whether the match will go ahead.
But a much happier twist then see Rocky restart his training schedule, this time with more enthusiasm, and the fight is on….

With the training scenes involving Rocky running through the streets of South Philadelphia, being joined by what seems like hundreds of young people chanting his name as he leaps over benches and sprints up the steps of the Museum of Art… it is clear that in this movie the fans are on the underdogs side more than ever.

As the fight starts Apollo comes out fast, knocking Rocky around the rings, pleasing his doubting fans….

But the fights not over till the last bell rings….and what a gripping finale it is….

Another great movie about the boxing fraternity and how an underdog can battle against the odds, in fact a fine sequel indeed, (which is a rare thing indeed).

The story line is very similar to the first movie, (Rocky), but this doesn't seem to matter as deep down you will be willing the Italian Stallion to win this fight.

It is worth watching but you should watch the first Rocky to understand why there is so much friction between the two fighters.

The movie runs at a good speed, with Rocky going through his training, fighting firstly with his emotions as his wife's life hangs in the balance. Then pushing himself to the brink in the hope of beating his opponent.

The scenes in the ring is again as good as the first Rocky, the blood spitting from behind the mouth guards, the punishing combinations of pure power and utter determination from both warriors.
The boxing match is realistic enough to believe you are actually watching a world heavy weight championship match, the only clue that you're not is when the scenes begin to flash from round to round as the boxers punish each other in slow motion.

Would I recommend this…..?

Yes I certainly would, (but I am a little biased as I love the Rocky films, well most of them anyway).

If you are a Rocky fan, and you enjoyed the first movie, then you will enjoy this very much indeed.
Although the story line and the basic theme of the movie is the same as Rocky it still doesn't disappoint as the training techniques and the boxing ring action is worth watching.

Stallone plays the punch drunk fighter to perfection, (although I suspect a lot of this is his real self). His blundering attempts at romancing Adrian are somewhat funny, almost pitiful on part but rather romantic in others.

Both he and Carl Weathers, (Apollo) play the boxers brilliantly, there physiques realistically like true boxing heroes.

It is in all a fine sequel to a fine film. The action is great and it also contains a good dollop of romance… if you don't mind the violence of the boxing ring then this is another for you.
