setup. A great alternative to acoustic triggers and a rack sampler, the SPD-S lets you record CD-quality samples and play them back instantly using six pads and three edge triggers. Naturally, the SPD-S also includes preset sounds and effects so you can start playing immediately. While the SPD-S lets you sample up to 200 User waveforms, it?s nice to know there are plenty of Preset sounds available at any given moment. In fact, the SPD-S contains over 120 Presets covering everything from acoustic and electronic drums to percussion and sound effects. Combine the onboard sounds with your own sampled sounds and loops to create the ultimate drum kit. A sampling CD is included to get you started. The SPD-S includes a powerful multi-effects processor with 28 algorithms and unique ambiance effects, giving you the power to sculpt any Preset or User sound into something entirely new. Once you?ve created an effected sound, you can resample the waveform freeing the effects for something else. Drummers can even create original phrase loops using the onboard pattern sequencer and resampling function -- just sequence a pattern and resample the output. Now the entire sequence can be triggered like a phrase loop from one of the pads!Expansion is key with the SPD-S. Start with a Compact Flash slot for expanding sampling time and storing waveform data. An External Trigger input lets drummers add an optional drum pad in either a head or head/rim configuration. And with MIDI In and Out, the SPD-S can function as a trigger for external modules or be used in studio setups with a sequencer.Features :? Compact percussion multi-pad with CD-quality sampling? Play any 8 sounds simultaneously via 6 pads and 3 edge triggers? Up to 380 seconds of 44.1kHz user sampling (95 seconds in Fine mode)? 200 User waveforms and 120 ?ready-to-play? Preset waveforms? Resampling function and onboard pattern sequencer? 28 multi-effects and ambiance add dimension to sounds? Wave memory expandable via optional Compact Flash cards? Mounts easily to conventional drum stands and hardware
sampling. The Roland SPD-S has six pads and three edge triggers that allow drummers to trigger CD-quality samples and create phrase loops complete with pro-quality effects. Roland SPD-S main features include: Compact electronic percussion multi-pad with CD-quality sampling Play 8 sounds simultaneously via 6 pads and 3 edge triggers Approx. 12 minutes of 44.1kHz sampling (3 minutes in Fine mode) 399 User waveforms and 181 "ready-to-play" waveforms pre-loaded into User memory Onboard pattern sequencer and resampling function 30 multi-effects and ambience add dimension to sounds Import and export .WAV/AIFF files with your Mac or PC using optional CompactFlash cards
Advantages: Cheap, feature-packed, responsive and great sounding; perfect for many standard professional needs and beginners who want to splash out. DD's have been manufactured for atleast a decade or so Disadvantages: No match for an acoustic kit or VDrums, toyish looking, some minor irregularities in pad response and limitations to the in-built recording feature
...35 which is pretty much a learners version of the DD9/20.
The DD55 is fairly weighty and bulky for a little machine, but with it's variety of features you shouldn't be surprised. Marketed as 'for the serious drummer' it appeals as it features the holy grail of electronic connectivity: General MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface - which has been going since the early 80's) - thus naturally played rhythm tracks can be played into your favourite sequencer app. It's much more intuitive than clicking in hits by a mouse or tapping them in by keyboard keys which can be time consuming and can produce a mechanicalness which may not always be desirable.
The MIDI implementation via In/Out sockets is perfect (considering Roland's SPD's only do Outs), topped off with a little MIDI menu for more sequencer/hardware specific functions, plus you...

Advantages: Fat Analog Sounds Disadvantages: Hard to find a unit in mint condition
...I am the proud owner of a Roland Juno 106 from 1984. It is a classic polyphonic analog synthesizer. If you are looking for a true analog instrument and you are on a budget, look no more!. The 106 produces fat basslines, and wonderful 80's style leads. It'ss very intuitive and easy to use. The digital chips in my unit are not working, but I can still produce outstanding sounds via the Manual function. No analog modelling, no gimmicks, this synth will work wonders both on stage and in the studio. For samples of this instrument, listen to Madonna's Ray of Light album by William Orbit. It's also been used extensively by The Chemical Brothers, BT, Kevin Saunderson, Moby, and many others.

...After several years of hard graft my old Roland died and it was time for a new one. I knew that technology had moved on since my old one was produced but I had no idea how much! I am a classical pianist without the room for an acoustic piano so buying another digital was my only option. Digital pianos have always seemed a bit of a compromise to me but this Roland model compromises nothing!
With it's progressive hammer action you really wouldn't know you were playing a digital if you had your eyes closed and the sound is just incredible. It is very easy to operate and has some great voices.
For what you would get in an acoustic piano for the same money this instrument is amazing value and for me sounds and feels much better than any of the more expensive Yamaha models....
