Queen of Suspense Loses Her Touch
Review of Before I Say Goodbye - Mary Higgins Clark by prelude210

Advantages: Good Plot
Disadvantages: Not enough originality

...me but her newest work Before I say Goodbye doesn't seem to meet the same standard. I found Mary did something I myself would never consider doing. While introducing each character, she described them right away. Most of these descriptions were unnecessary and stereotypical. One opening description was "Deep in thought, she was oblivious to the admiring glances that came her way." That sentence alone has been overused so much that I refused to read ...
...to better, subtler description methods. She follows this tactic several times throughout the first two chapters causing me to grow restless and skip past those parts. Another problem that I had was the ending. It gripped me in a fantastic grip of suspense until the ending, which left me with a question mark hanging over my head, much like in the cartoons. In the effort of giving a quick and happy ending, there was a lack of closure to the mystery ... Read review

Not so good
Review of Daddys Little Girl - Mary Higgins Clark by liz1102

Advantages: Potentially a good plot
Disadvantages: But poorly executed, just didn't hold my interest or engage me at all

This was another of my charity shop buys. Being such a well known name (Mary Higgins Clark) in the crime and suspense genres, I thought it was going to be a good one, but I was strangely disappointed by it. Plot The first few chapters tell the real time, third person, events of the night when fifteen year old Andrea went missing and her seven year old sister Ellie ultimately found the mangled body, surrounded by a pool of blood, the next morning. ...
...nineteen year old Rob Westerfield and they had shared many secret phone calls and meetings in a near by garage. Ellie, as the devoted little sister, was sworn never to reveal this information, but she does and it helps lead to Rob's jail time. Being the only one who knew about their secret meeting place, Ellie becomes guilty that, if only she'd spoken up the night before, perhaps Andrea could have been found alive. The remainder of the book is written ... Read review

Never-never Land Gone Wrong!
Review of A Cry In The Night - Mary Higgins Clark by Mattroberts

Advantages: Good writing, couldn't put it down
Disadvantages: The ending was a bit abrupt

...really blame me for being a bit bored. I’d have done anything to read a good book, but sadly I had nothing in the house for my hunger to feed. So, I did the unthinkable in my eyes – I popped to the local charity shop and picked up a book I’d never seen before. I didn’t even read the blurb, and I went home to read it. From the first page I saw the resemblance between Higgins Clark and Danielle Steel. The description of the ...
...book. She manages to tell a story so scandalously that you can’t help but read the whole thing in one sitting, and you are absolutely hooked. Then, at the end you suddenly think – why did I even read this? But, luckily A Cry In The Night is that bit better! ●~The Plot~● Jenny lives in New York with her two daughters Beth and Tina. She’s a single Mother – after her Nana died three months previously, and she spilt ... Read review

Disappointing but good for discussion
Review of The Memory Keeper's Daughter - Kim Edwards by brokenangelkisses

Advantages: Beautiful language; interesting plot premise
Disadvantages: Plot neglected to allow characters thinking time

At the heart of this story is a worm of a secret that burrows so deep it tears a family apart. Layered over this core are the histories of several alternately sympathetic and irritating characters. After delivering his (unexpected) twins, Doctor David Henry is disturbed to realise that, although the boy is perfect, the girl is a 'classic' 'mongoloid'. Much of the interest in this section springs from the dispassionate way in which he handles this ...
...David has instructed to hand the child over to an institution to live out (what he imagines) will be a short and pain filled life. All this is achieved before Norah, David's wife, even awakens after the birth. When she does, David impulsively tells her that Phoebe died at birth. It is this secret that will rub away at their relationship over the ensuing years. Caroline Gill, a lonely nurse who harbours feelings for the doctor, cannot bear to hand ... Read review

She never fails!
Review of Out of the Blue - Belinda Jones by Kittyk8e

Advantages: Full of adventure, not too long a story
Disadvantages: None

I love Belinda Jones books and once again she has failed to disappoint me. I really enjoy how she manages to make you feel as tho you're there with the characters and also makes you feel as tho, in some ways, you're the leading lady being swooned by a lovely greek man. You can also tell that Belinda hadn't just written a story, you could see how much research she has put into writing this book as she mentions the myths of the greek gods and how different ...
...book down until i had read the whole thing hich proved to be difficult as i was at work when i read it. After i had finished reading the book it made me want to hop on a plane and go and visit this wonderful greek island. The way that she describes everything is so colourful and she doesn't over describe things and lets your imagination run wild. I found it to be slightly predictive but some of the events which happened came a total surpise to me. ... Read review
