Review of Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda - Roméo Dallaire by pinkambie

Advantages: Important, moving, well written
Disadvantages: Disturbing at points.

...As a student of the Rwandan genocide, this book was one of my first ports of call when researching my dissertation. This is perhaps one of the most honest and complete accounts of those fateful 100 days in April 1994, in which almost a million men, women and children were slaughtered, written by the commander of UNAMIR (the UN Assistance Mission for Rwanda). It is a stunning indictment of Western organisations and governments who failed to act to stop the slaughter, even as the casualties mounted. It does not shy away from the details of the horror of the war, and as such is at some points a highly disturbing read, but one which I believe everyone should endeavour to undertake. The details that Dallaire provides about his early life help to explain some of his actions during the genocide, and the effects that his placement in Rwanda... Read review

Romeo and Juliet
Review of Romeo and Juliet - William Shakespeare by Groovygal2_99

Advantages: A lot of action
Disadvantages: Get's a little boring in the middle

...Romeo and Juliet is a love story about two families torn apart by war. The Montegues and Capulets. Romeo and Juliet meet each other at a dance, and love in love. They want to be together, but the families are so torn apart, that it just isn’t possible. Anyway, a fight breaks out between Romeo and Juliet’s cousin, in which Romeo kills him. He is then known as a murderer around the town. You have to read the rest to find out what happens though. There are also so many versions of the play on tape, that you can watch what happens. I recommend this to anyone who likes Shakespeare’s works, and also people who love romantic stories.... Read review

Review of Romeo and Juliet - William Shakespeare by reh

Advantages: If you don't know the story (sorry) it keeps you on edge.
Disadvantages: Shakespearean language is hard to grip at first

...There are two main families in Verona, the town where the play is set. Theses are the Montagues and the Capulets. These two families are constantly fighting and after one public brawl, they are told if they disturb the peace again their lives shall pay for it. Romeo and Juliet meet at the Capulet ball, where Romeo has sneaked in with his cousin, Benvolio, and best mate, Mercutio. He and Juliet fall in love at first sight. Unfortunately, Juliet's cousin sees Romeo has sneaked in and vows to get revenge. After this, Romeo and Juliet are married in secret. Later that same day, Tybalt comes after Romeo and when Romeo won't fight, he slays Mercutio instead. Romeo is so angry and upset that he battles Tybalt and kills him too. He is banished, instead of executed and has one last night with Juliet. Meanwhile, Juliet's parents plan for her... Read review
