My two year old son loves books and as my friend worls in a bookshop I can guarantee what his Christ mas present was going to be! Of course, a book!
This Christmas, I was not quite prepared for the book he was going to receive.
The parcel was about 40cm square and thin and bendy. On opening the present, I saw a bold colourful front cover with the title 'Room on the Broom', Itis illustrated with a witch with a crooked nose and a wart, wearing the famous black pointy hat, cloak and boots. With a red top and purple skirt to match her orange bow in her ginger hair, I can not give any points for dress sense! (Sorry, I was trying to be funny!) She is carrying a cauldron in one hand and her wand in the other. Riding the broom with her is a ginger stripey cat.
The author is Julia Donaldson and the illustrater is Axel Schleffer. The book is from a series called 'BIG BOOKS' (for obvious reasons) They are new publications (2003) of Ted Smart. There are only two other titles at the moment but they are available in standard book form . The other titles are 'The Gruffalo' and 'Monkey Puzzle'. The cost of the books is £9,99 which is quite a lot but I thought it was worth it! The books are big and quite tricky to handle but the size enthralled my son and demands it to be read all the time!!
The story begins as the front cover suggests; the witch and the cat flying on the broomstick. As the witch clumsily keeps dropping her things she is joined by helpful animals who find them for her; a dog finds her hat, a bird finds her bow and a frog finds her wand! All of the animals ask if there is 'Room on the Broom' for them and jump on.The over enthusiasm from the frog causes the broomstick to break and sends the witch into the clutches of a big red dragon who plans to have 'Witch and Chips' for tea. The animal friends come to the rescue and as a reward the witch creates a 'TRULY MAGNIFICENT BROOM!' for them all to sit on, with seats and a shower for the frog! Luxury!
Each section of the story is repetitive to encourage child participation.The longer words are repeated so that the child can get their head around them. My son helps me read it now! Also throughout the pages there are lots of added detail inthe pictures, such as fish and sheep which you play I Spy with. This is quite hood fun!
The book is very good fun and over 16 pages it is quite long but your child will be spellbound for the full story. It will also be good as my son gets older and begins to read. The writing is big and bold.
At the back of the book is a page of Activity Ideas. There are details of how to act it out as a play, what costumes you need and other props. Also there are words and music for a song to accompany the story.
