Firstly I would like to thank Starsally for telling me that there was a space to write about my favourite soft drink. So thank you Starsally.
Among most of my friends, it seems that I am the only one who likes to drink Root Beer. This I cannot understand as I think that it is one of the most refreshing drinks around.
A well-known fast food chain first introduced me to this. I bought my first one and from then on I was hooked. Unfortunately in time they discontinued this flavour at their branches and I can say that I was well and truly gutted.
I have searched far and wide, while on my travels, tried this brand and that brand. All in all I have tried a far few combinations. I am now happy to report that I have found a brand that I am happy with.
Would you believe I have found this at Asda? I was looking for my children’s favourite fizzy drink, when low and behold there was Root Beer. Needless to say I forgot the children’s drinks and bought the pack of six that they come in.
The Company that make this particular brand are called Carters. Eric Carter founded E. Carter and Co in 1894.
The outer packaging is made of cardboard wrapped around six cans. The top of this pack is a solid blue colour with no writing on. There are the two carry-holes, which make carrying easier. Either side of the package in the background is a slightly blurred photograph of an American Flag overlaid with the words ‘Carters, REFRESHING ROOT BEER. BEST SERVED CHILLED.”
Take one of these cans out of the package, and you will see the same blurred American Flag with the same words as the outer package, this time printed twice on the can. At the back of the can (if a can has a back in reality) you are informed that this is a carbonated fruit flavour soft drink with sugar and sweeteners. It is amazing what can be made with water, sugar, one E number, preservatives and sweeteners today.
Once the cans have been chilled, I personally do think that they do taste better chilled. You pull open the can and are greeted with a loudish Fizz as you puncture the can. Take time to smell what you are about to drink, it sure has a different smell to all the other soft drinks, in fairness the smell to me means a fresh clean medical aroma. Now take a sip and let it tingle on your tongue. I think that Root Beer has a unique taste all of its own. Yes some of my friends and some new friends that I have met on Ciao seem to think that it has a taste of a certain antiseptic liquid. Me well I can see their point of view, as it does seem to taste and smell like antiseptic but I still think that it is a refreshing, mouth tingling drink. I would like to say, that if they could I would like the taste just that little bit stronger.
Nutritional Information (per 100ml)
Energy 147kj/34.5kcal Protein NIL Carbohydrate 8.4g Of which sugars 8.4g Fat NIL Of which saturates NIL Fibre NIL Sodium Trace
Each can holds 330ml.
The cost of this pack was £1.19, which works out at just under 20p per can. I do think that is very good value.
I have found that you can make your own Root Beer at home, but it is just as easy to buy it in.
If you like an unusual tasting drink, then pour a chilled can over some ice and place a slice of freshly cut Lemon. Now that is a perfect drink for a hot summers day.So relax and enjoy.
Advantages: It has a very unique taste. Disadvantages: So many types.
There are so many Root Beer brands here in the United States. There are even people who have their own recipes and make their own. Root Beer is a sweetened, carbonated drink that originally was made using the root of the sassafras plant or the bark from the tree. Birch Beer is similar, but uses birch tree bark.
Depending on the different regions, a variety of other ingredients were added. Anything from dandelion, juniper, corn syrup, etc., but the ... ...bit more thicker. A perfect Root Beer is drunk from a Beer mug or stein, and should be full-bodied and thickly foamed.
It is actually processed like a beer, put in barrels and kegs. I think it would be hard to find a commercial Root Beer that uses sassafras, and uses all the old time ingredients. Today it's about flavor. Nobody actually pours it in a mug anymore, but it does have a chocolatey rich foam!
Root Beer does not contain caffeine, and ...

Advantages: Delicious! Disadvantages: Only 1 Brand in UK easily available.
...in the same way that Root Beer does.
Let me explain.….
On its own, Root Beer (RB) is a tasty thirst quencher, it’s flavour one to be savoured as opposed to being an easily swallowed complimentary taste to carbonated water.
Root Beer is always, and I cant stress enough how important it is for RB to be served COLD.
Even at it’s lowest point before freezing, pouring a pint glass of RB always yields a glass full of body, with a head somewhat like ... ...it wrong, you get all root beer stuff all over the floor, then it goes sticky.
GET A PINT GLASS! (Just over half a Litre to our European cousins) Put a big blob of ICE CREAM (a big blob = what you get at the ice cream truck) of really frozen cold not too expensive ice cream (the expensive stuff melts too fast) in the bottom of your pint glass.
Supervisory Point – Get mum, wife, or be careful.
Introduce cold RB onto ice cream, you will immediately ...

Advantages: Not many people will nick your drink Disadvantages: Not many brands available
Ever since I first tried root beer at McDonalds (years ago before there stopped selling it) I have loved it! A very refreshing drink best served ice cold.
Definately an aquired taste due to its likeness to "antiseptic" or "mouthwash" as some people will say.
The only problem in the UK is the lack of variety that you see in American supermarkets (truth be told, you are lucky if you even see it in UK supermarkets)
To my knowledge there are only ... ...most like a "proper" American root beer
Bundaberg: An Australian root beer (Imported) sold in Waitrose in "stubby" bottles, probably my favorite root beer at the moment but lacks the edge of US - style root beers
Sainsburys own label "Traditional" root beer: Avoid like a root beer plague! the last bottle of this I had tasted disgusting, NOT GOOD ROOT BEER AT ALL!
If you have any shops near you that import sweets/drinks from the US try A&W or MUG ...

Root beer, its one of those great American traditions. When I was younger and I watched American kids programs I wondered how they got away with drinking a beer. When I actually went to America for the first time I realised it was simply a soft drink and was almost as wide spread as other soft drinks such as Coca-Cola. Available as a drink with your McDonlads or in a theme park I quickly came to try it for the first time. Now the name root beer doesn't ... ...and had a taste for root beer, so I had to buy some for him. But now you don't have to go all the way over there to get it, as its available over here now. Albeit it its still quite rare. A few supermarkets do sell it. In particular Asda sells 330ml cans in 6 packs (made by Carters). I've yet to tell if different brands taste different, but I'm sure they do, I'm just not drinking enough obviously!
Apparently root in root beer does refer to an actual ...

Advantages: Rare In the UK Disadvantages: It tastes like Germolene
...USA I thought I'd try Root Beer.... I knew from the moment I opened the can I had made a mistake. It smells like antiseptic cream, and tastes pretty much the same. I honestly thought I'd like it being such a fan of Dandelion And Burdock, but I couldn't drink more than a mouthful of the stuff. It is widely available in Asda, but quite who would buy it is beyond me! There are so many things American I like.... Root Beer isn't one of them! (I guess ...

Advantages: It's refreshing, tastes good, not too expensive. Disadvantages: It's not the real thing.
...So I was just out on this glorius sunny spring afternoon washing my car and had a bit of a thirst on when I came back inside (hopefully this is the start of the nicer weather), so I went to the fridge to see what we had that was cold to drink and I came across one single can of carters rootbeer.
Now I've had rootbeer so many times before. It's very popular in America where I've travelled a lot and also lived, but I still never tire of drinking a nice Ice cold rootbeer on a hot afternoon.
*****WHAT IS IT*****
Rootbeer is a carbonated soft drink which is very popular in America and very difficult to find here in the UK. Traditionally, rootbeer was brewed using sassafras bark, a tree native to North America and Eastern Asia, and rootbeer is typically associated with the flavour of Sassafras, however, in 1976, the bark was...

Advantages: A huge variery of flavours to suit every taste Disadvantages: None
...packs (they are tiny bags though with only about 5 in each )
My faveourite flavours include candy floss, berry blue, very cherry and bubble gum.
I like to pop one in my mouth and them guess what flavour it is, and sometimes you may be unlucky enough to get one of my not so favourite flavours such as rootbeer, cinnamon and jalepino.
Definately give them a try, and if your really cheeky you could always have a sneaky taste in Selfridges before you buy ;)...

Advantages: Good packaging, affordable. Disadvantages: To sweet, to much sugar, don't like the taste
...Well, in my opinion i feel that coca-cola leaves me bloated and with a foul taste in my mouth. Also it makes my teeth feel gritty and dirty. I also don't like how it burns my throat when i drink it. However the packaging is attractive, and i know it is very popular with my friends. The price is alright, it could be cheaper when buying a drink from a drink machine. All in all i think this product will be around for a long time to come. Its just not my kind of drink. Coca-cola as a brand however, i have no problem with, there are many other drinks made by coca cola that i do enjoy, such as Sprite, and their rootbeer,. I do like coca-cola's ads, both on paper and televsion....
