Rosemary

This is a highly scented herb, which has needle like leaves, there is white rosemary, pink rosemary and blue rosemary.
Rosemary will attract bees in your garden as its scent is quite strong and bees love it , it has many uses in cooking, pot pourris and is used as an ingredient in shampoo.
It combines well with garlic, bay and wine. I always put a sprig of it in with the roast lamb or roast pork on a Sunday, it can be used to marinate rabbit or game if you eat this sort of meat. Rosemary also goes well with oily fish like mackrel or sardines. It's an ideal addition to a pan of homemade soup for extra flavour.
You can dry rosemary and keep it in jars for when you need it but it is best used fresh.

Rosemary is effective for a wide range of complaints like skin and hair problems, dandruff, headaches and stress. It can be used as a decongestant by inhalation of an infusion of the herb in hot water. Also it can be used to freshen the breath by gargling with it and has been said to enhance the memory.
It should also be said that it should NOT be used during pregnancy or by epileptics.
A sprig or two in the bath will help you to relax.

Rosemary is a shrub type plant and it flowers in spring, it grows to about 3 to 6 feet high if you regulaly trim it. A plant can be bought for around 60p at bootsales and from 50p to 1.50 at garden centres depending on the size of the plant. It should be planted in well drained soil and likes to be in a sunny spot.
You can also buy a varigated form of rosemary which is often grown as a hedge, it's name is Miss Jessops and it grows upright to about 4 to 5 feet high.

I love this in my garden, its colour and scent make my garden nice to sit in. My herb garden has taken a few years to get developed but it is well worth the wait.
Free herbs for cooking and drying can't be beaten.

My wife and I love Rosemary, but had no idea about not eating it while pregnant... must remember that. Paul.

I have a little bush of this in a pot outside my back door, and even if you don't cook with it, its a lovely thing to run your hand over just to release the wonderful fragrance.

I always find it amazing how different a meal tastes if you have added rosemary. Nice op. Lorraine x.
