Super write up by zebra you can learn much from it. I prefer climbers myself and have 4 `Pauls Scarlet growing within a few feet of each other. Climbers can be trained to intermingle with each other to give a cascade of color. Although mine are all a brilliant red they are spectacular when in full bloom. I have learned one trick which zebra did not mention. Locate your nearest chimney sweep and buy a sack of soot from him/her. it should not cost much more than £1. Make sure it is old stuff and for best results let it stand uncovered on the garden for a few weeks. Then scatter it round the base of your roses and hoe it into the soil. The sulpher content really does fight off black spot. If you cast your mind back you will recall that blackspot became rampant just after the clean air act was introduced giving good evidence that the sulpher emitted from chimneys kept it at bay. Go on give it a try. You will have to ignore some of the ratings below because they do not apply.
