their victims and better than the police investigating them. Mastermind, the villain of James Patterson's new thriller Roses are Red, goes one better--he does not even have to do all his own killings, simply manipulate the bank robbers he gathers for progressively more vicious hostage takings into ever more bloody massacres. Psychologist-investigator Alex is already coping with the aftermath of a previous case--the woman he loves has been so badly traumatised by the killer who abducted her for months that she does not want to be near him or their child; and now he finds himself dealing with a case where completely arbitrary decisions about who lives and who dies are the order of the day. Mastermind is ahead of the game each step of the way--this is a novel about the pain of betrayal as well as the pain of responsibility; Alex is a flawed, clever man driven near to breaking point by the knowledge that, if he guesses things wrong, people will die, and that they may die anyway just to spite him. --Roz Kaveney
Advantages: A Good Read Disadvantages: Predictable In Places, Poor Ending.
Roses are Red, written by best selling Crime novelist James Patterson is the most recent book that I have read. Published in 2000 it is another book in his series of novels to feature his fictitious Detective Alex Cross. I have read a couple of Patterson's earlier works, including Cat and Mouse which I found to be an enjoyable read so I began to read Roses are Red with eager anticipation during my daily commutes to and from work.
From the first ... ...book.
So to conclude Roses are Red is a good book and there is enough happening to keep you fully gripped throughout but it is not an amazing book, and in places it covers ground that Patterson has already visited in previous novels. having said that I am glad that I did choose to read this novel and I will not hesitate to read other books by this author in the future.

Advantages: Interesting story, lots of shocks and surprises Disadvantages: Irritating and poor writing style, poorly developed characters
...his novels from Ebay - Roses Are Red, which was published in 2000. I will admit here to a slight prejudice towards female authors. This has always been the case from Judy Blume and Enid Blyton through Jane Austen, Martina Cole and Kathy Reichs. I do like some male authors - Ben Elton and Terry Pratchett come to mind - but I definitely prefer women writers. Maybe this has tainted my views on Patterson somewhat. But I will try to offer an unbiased ... ...I didn't hate Roses Are Red and I am pleased I finished it. I would consider reading another of his - if it dropped into my lap one day and no other books were around - but I certainly won't be going out of my way to read the rest of his work. I believe he's over-rated and needs to polish up his writing style before publishing any more novels.

...are committing terrible crimes and Roses are Red is no exception.
The book begins with a brutal bank robbery and like all of Patterson's books you are taken into the mind of the killer as well as the hero. The villain is the Mastermind who is planning a series of crimes against Banks and Insurance firms, most ending with a high body account. The FBI are clueless (as usual) and Cross finds himself trying to catch the killer as well as deal with an ... ...the plot any further without giving too much away.
As in previous books, Patterson is adept at delivering shocking plot twists and hooks that make the book hard to put down (bit of a cliché, I know). It is really one of those stories where you need to know what happens next and although some of the twists can at first seem implausible, Patterson makes you believe a few pages later.
Basically the book is a detective novel with strong character and ...

Advantages: Easy to Read Disadvantages: Far too many chapters, gives away a lot of previous books, very poor twist
“Roses are Red” is available in Tesco for £4.84 and with this book you get a copy of “Pop goes the Weasel”. Both books are written by James Patterson and feature Detective Alex Cross. I had not read any of Patterson’s previous work but I was aware of the movie versions of “Kiss the Girls” and “Along came a Spider”. I must admit that I thought that “Kiss the Girls” was a very poor film ... ...Patterson’s writing was probably going to be worth a look. The first thing I noticed is that there was a chapter ever 3 pages on average. There are over 120 chapters in a 400 page book. I felt that this was totally unnecessary; some chapters led on perfectly from the previous one and seemed to be called a new chapter just for the hell of it. I am aware that I am criticising the writing style of a professional author and that my own writing ...

...That leads me nicely to Roses are Red which is available at all good book stores and libraries. Price, well I borrowed mine from the library but I have seen prices ranging from as little as just under a fiver all the way up to £16.99 for the hardback. Personally I never think full price is value for money but I'm sure the vast majority of authors would beg to differ.
I haven't not thoroughly enjoyed any James Patterson (JP hereafter) book. Most ... ...crime thriller genre. Roses are Red is the sixth book in the Detective Alex Cross series and because I don't want to spoil anything (for people that might want to read the book) I'll do my damndest not to give too much away. If you do want to read the Alex Cross series then try to do so in order. Reading out of order will not ruin anything major, but there are a few links throughout the entire series that are best read in sequence. This order is ...
