The tale tells of Rosie chickens walk around a farmyard as a predatory fox follows her. Rosie does not seem to notice the fox .She goes on her walk oblivious of his presence.

This book has few words relying on the pictures to tell the story. The pictures are bold colourful . but a little dated not as vibrant as a lot of modern childrens books. The pictures portraying the fox as very sly and Rosie oblivious to him watching her. This is a good book for teaching prepositions over under, around, behind.
Children find it amusing to see the fox apparently unseen by Rosie (the fox is not even mentioned in the text) and watch the mishaps he has. The children want to warn Rosie and to see what befalls him on the next page it is exciting to see if he gets Rosie, fortunately he does not.
This is a great book as the events are predictable ask your child what do you think will happen next and they will be able to work it out as the pictures really do tell the story
Pre readers will see you read the words on the page and understand that the writing is words a beginning of understanding and reading.
This is a good book to read with your child explaining and pointing things out as you read the story . After you have read the book you can play a game of going for a walk around the house, going under the table over the bed behind the settee just like Rosie went around her farmyard home. Have fun enjoy reading with your children
Advantages: Great early learning book Disadvantages: Don't read it too often...not alot of mileage
I have read this book so many times to different children and they tend to love it!
THE STORY
"Rosie the hen goes for a walk". The first page starts it off in the style of the whole book...simple but effective.
Rosie is a chubby little hen who I always imagine to be a bit of a busybody, and off she goes for a walk... unbeknown to her, she is being followed by a big bad fox! So there she goes quite oblivious to the fact that she is being followed, ... ...of her journey shows her going "across the yard" (yes, those are the only words!), and then when you turn the page, boing, the fox stands on a garden fork which hits him in the face.
This is the format of the whole book; a double page telling us where Rosie goes next and then a double page with no text, just a picture of the mishaps befalling the fox, whilst Rosie walks contentedly on. After going "across the yard, around the pond, over the haycock, ...

Advantages: Great for 4 -7 year olds Disadvantages: None!
A great book for 4 - 7 year olds and definately one to keep on the book shelves at home. The story tells us about Rosie and her walk around the farmyard and the other animals that she meets. It is a moral tale and it has a happy ending. I would definately recommend it for both boys and girls - I have used it many times in my job as a Foundation Stage/Key Stage One teacher. The children love the pictures, which are clear and colourful. They enjoy ... ...Children like to discuss the book and it gives adults a good opportunity to talk about how they would behave etc. It is a good book to share with Mum or Dad and the children like to draw/paint their own version of the characters and events afterwards. The book also encourages the children to begin reading because they can begin to recognise common words which they would also be learning at school. The text is clear and easy for children to understand. ...

Don't Forget the Bacon!
**************************
There is no narrative in this book, it is all told through speech bubbles or thought bubbles.
It begins with the Mum giving the boy a verbal list of shopping:
"Six farm eggs, a cake for tea, a pound of pears and don't forget the bacon."
As the boy passes different things on his way to ...
Advantages: Endearing story about being the youngest sibling. Disadvantages: The illustrations are a little dated.
it was the little seed that made Titch feel so very proud of himself and special. He had quietly triumphed over his older siblings.
~ The Style ~
This is a very short book with very few words on each page, great for emergent readers as the text is very simple.
~ Illustrations ~
PatHutchins shows great compassion for the curse of the youngest child, especially in her drawings of Titch's wrinkly, down-turned mouth and his sad, desperate little eyes, bless him!
The drawings are very simple and one must forgive the hairstyles and the clothes as this was written in 1971!
She captures all of the emotions of the children in her drawings, the shock and horror of the older siblings when they realise that Titch's seed is growing in to a large plant and their smug faces when they have much better things than Titch to play with etc ...
Advantages: A good story for young children Disadvantages: The fashions are a little dated
as each page is turned, the buds are coming out, a bird is building a nest. Then the eggs can be seen in the nest and the tulips are out in full bloom with more and more leaves on the tree.
The plant in the lounge also demonstrates the passage of time, going from no flowers to full bloom!
For someone very observant, Mum's tummy is also expanding, the end result of a new little brother for Titch is shown at the end.
PatHutchins drawings of Titch in the cast offs from his brother and sister are endearing and very cleverly done, they are just so, so big and baggy on poor old Titch.
So although, most of the scenes are in the lounge, there is still a lot to discuss.
~ Books by PatHutchins ~
* Don't forget the bacon
* Rosie's walk
* Clocks and more clocks
Other Titch books
* Titch dresses up
* Titch's snowy day
