Throughout my childhood I've had many hamsters, and decided it was time to get another after being free of the responsibility for a few years. Before I bought one, I wanted a girl, so went in search for a little cage for her. If I'm honest, I wasn't too fussed about what sort of cage I had, but when I found the Rotastak pink starter cage, I decided that was the one!
The rotastak cage comes in a basic cardboard box with an image of the cage on all sides, showing it at several angles. This makes it look quite fascinating, though when you open up the top and pull out all the seperated parts, things get a little more complicated! The main circular cage comes in just two parts, with the slide-on bottom sitting underneath. Once you've attached that, you need to attach the smaller, already-connected upper circular cage (commonly used as a sleeping location) to the larger one by using two of the clear pink tubes provided. Now, you can stop there and just pop in some of the little stoppers at the other tube openings, or you can use the three other tubes provided (one of which is curved), and include the little carrycase in your hamster's home too. A stopper is also provided with a hole for the waterbottle to be slotted into. Once completed, the cage is quite large and takes up a lot of room.
With the cage itself, you are also provided with a waterbottle and a food dish for your hamster, as well as a built-on plastic wheel. A sheet of stickers is also included with the cage, though I have decided not to use these. The cage looks nice enough without them, a rather shocking shade of pink - much brighter than suggested on the box.
I won't lie, setting up the cage is not an easy or quick job. It's incredibly fiddly and takes an awful lot of patience! However, when it's all completed, you've got a home your hamster is certain to love! And I don't suppose hamsters have much colour preference, so can be used with a boy! It's not the easiest to clean either, and takes a while to pull apart and piece back together. Though I suppose over time it will become easier as the joints and connections loosen. Thankfully it doesn't need too much sawdust either, but you can give your hamster as much bedding as they wish to keep them snug and warm!
The cage is quite cheap compared to others, at just £25 from Argos. You can also purchase other Rotastak cages and extra tubes, and build onto this, creating a world of wonder for your little pet!
