One to Withstand the Tests of Time

Advantages: fantastic smooth sound, "analogue touch", very good reading of scratched CDs, best buy
Disadvantages: no optical digital output, scarce functionality

...was perfectly happy with my Rotel CD player. Excellent sound, solid construction and all the functionality I needed. Until I discovered its successor. Suddenly my old CD-player, looked old-fashioned and had the appeal of a worn off antique sofa.

The product in question is the Rotel RCD-950, a £350 CD-Player, top-rankings player in its price range, recipient of endless awards from the major audiophile publications, and sex-symbol of ...
...I immediately went to my Rotel dealer, left a deposit and took the new RCD-951 home for a week, and expected my 950 to look really old when tested against the 951. Surprisingly (considering how easily I usually waste money without second thoughts) I kept my old RCD-950. And my week of extensive testing has left me with three conclusions, which are still valid today:

1. If you have £350 for a new CD-Player, buy a new Rotel RCD-951 and ... more

Excellent machine, Rotel Rule!!

Advantages: Sound quality, build quality, durability
Disadvantages: Awkward Program function

This is a fantastic cd player - it has lasted around 8 years, and the sound quality has still not faded in the slightest. It has a good range of functionality, yet the controls are incredibly simply to use, as most of the most advanced functionality is well hidden in the menus, only to be accessed when needed. I still haven't even needed to clean the lens, so durability wise it is also unparalelled - basically, they don't make 'em like this any ...
...copes with all cd formats that I've thrown at it. The only possible complaint that I could drudge up was that the Program feature is a bit fiddly to use. They could have made it a lot simpler and more importantly quicker to use, but this is a minor gripe. ...

I publicly admit to Voyeurism - already updated

Advantages: Absolutely superb midrange frequencies and very smooth treble. Neutral and yet very atmospheric. Beats many speakers at twice its price.
Disadvantages: Slight problems with three-dimensional reproduction and upper bass overemphasis. Power-hungry and thus critical with some amplifiers.

-Fi system, take a week off from work. Input, Fine-tuning & Positioning As I have explained above with the quality of the software, the CDM 2 is just as picky with the hardware that powers it. Although this speaker is a very musical addition to almost every system and can even make an overly analytical Yamaha or Denon chain sound more harmonious, it does however quickly identify the weakest link in the chain. Thus you should do it the favour and supply it with first class hardware from source to end. In my case the CDM 2 operates in the following chain of components, each of which (or their successor models) I consider best buys in their price range: CD-Player: Rotel RCD-950, £350 Tuner: Marantz ST-63, £200 Amplifier: Rotel RA-970BX, £300 Interconnects: Monitor Cable PC-OCC Crystal Symmetry, £30 each Speaker cable: Monitor Cable ...
