Effective and flexible software from Route 66

Advantages: Simple to use
Disadvantages: No facility to enter own points of interest, adding more maps costs a bit

I recieved Route 66 Navigate Britain 2004 bundled with a recent purchase of a PDA with built in GPS capabilities. I chose the bundle with Route 66 as it was the cheapest available. Initially skeptical due to the lower- priced software, I would encourage other potential buyers to ignore such stirirngs in your conscious as the software holds its own quite well. It doesn't have many fancy embellishments- you can't add your own points of interest, for example- but it does have all the basic functions that you might need from any PDA- based navigation software: It's easy to set the software up to guide you to your destination, and it automatically uses your current position as a starting point. In 'Navigate' mode, simply add one or more waypoints either by tapping on the map with your stylus, searching for an address in Route 66's ...

Route 66 sat nav

Advantages: small, compact, lightweight
Disadvantages: All data kept on SD card which wipes itself upon computer installation

Having recently passed my driving test, my parents bought me this sat nav for getting back and forward to university etc. I believe they bought it on special offer from halfords, buying this particular brand as they were getting such a good deal on it. When i first fired it up, the sat nav seemed a little slow, it took approximately 10 minutes to find a GPS signal and decide where it was. After this it was able to plan routes quickly and easily by either selecting a city centre or a post code/address. I was genuinely impressed with the model as it seemed to be doing its job, and also was a perfect size and weight. It was particularly attractive as you could download updates and even select a celebrity voice to dictate directions. I thought it was probably the perfect sat nav model for me. This was until i tried to plug it ...

Perfect if you already have a Bluetooth PocketPC

Advantages: good value, excellent GPS receiver, simple to use
Disadvantages: not as sophisticated as other (more expensive) navigation software

. The best place to put it is beneath the sunroof, second best is on the dashboard beneath the windscreen, although the flashing lights may distract and sometimes the position reading is not as accurate. Being a Bluetooth receiver, the connection is wireless. This was quite simple to set up - before running the software I switch on Bluetooth (so the blue LED is showing on the PDA), then tap the AA Navigator icon. As soon as the software needs a GPS position it will show a list of all nearby Bluetooth devices, including the GPS. Double-tap that and the connection is made. If the GPS is still warming up, the software will show the position and calculate the route as soon as it can. The box includes an in-car mount for the PDA that plugs into the air vents. This wouldn't fit in the air vents on my Peugeot 306 meaning that I can't use ...
