Get D-Link'd!

Advantages: Small, Easy to set up, can route up to 4 PCs...
Disadvantages: Time has to be reset sometimes...

...tell you all about the D-Link DSL G604T! I'm a little technologically impaired, so what does this do? It's simple: this gives internet access to multiple computers (you have to have a internet set-up with a company first, like BT). Wow, sounds great! But how fast can the internet speed go up to with this thing? You can get an internet speed of up to 100.0 Mbps, although it varies depending on which service you subscribe to, and the speed of your ...
...is quite easy to set up, as I believe you get a CD which helps you in the installtion process. If you are finding it hard, you can receive help at most good computer stores. Are there any set-backs to this thing? Yes, there is one major set back: the internet can stop working sometimes (I think it's something to do with the time set up on the DSL, and the actual time)...so the time has to be 're-matched' with the computer at certain times. Again, ...

Zoom around the internet in style!

Advantages: Small, and makes internet sharing as easy as pie
Disadvantages: A bit expensive, no built-in hub, a bit ugly!

...charged me £80 for the Zoom X3. I'm sure it's available cheaper online. --> WHAT IS A ROUTER? Routers have been much more common in big business until broadband internet made its way into homes. Rather than the PC or Mac making the connection through the modem, a router connects by itself. This means that the router is always connected, even when the computer is off. This makes internet sharing easier, as each computer just talks to the router ...
...So where does the Zoom X3 fit in? It has an ADSL modem built in, and one ethernet port. So you can connect directly, in the case of one computer, by plugging the router into your ethernet port (network card), or connect an ethernet hub to chain more computers through the one socket. If you wish, you can connect a wireless base station to the ethernet port at a later date. So now you know a bit about the confusing world of routers and ADSL, let's ...

A Router That Actually Works!

Advantages: Easy set-up, Works with Xbox Live, Plug 'n' Play, Router and Modem in one.
Disadvantages: Maximum 8MB/s downstream, Non-wireless.

I arrived at this router after a long struggle with other products not connecting or working how I wanted them to. I am by no means an expert in networking but I can tell you when a router is problematic. When I first got ADSL internet I started off on a Speedtouch router that resembled a Ray in the ocean. However, once I wanted to connect more than just my computer to the internet line at a time, I found the need for a router modem instead. I ...
...experience with their DM602 wasn't great. Everything went well until Xbox Live games included clan features. When I tried to join Rainbow Six matches, I'd be presented with an error regarding a strict NAT firewall. I couldn't find an option to change this, and not wanting to have problems with the upcoming Halo 2 videogame, I decided to purchase a new router pronto. Bring in the Speedtouch 510! The aesthetics of this router leave much to be desired ...

Gone wireless in my shed.....

Advantages: cheap and reliable - easy to set up (sort of)
Disadvantages: Power supply can be unreliable (and expensive to replace)

...and headed off to the d-link website for more information, it was there I found a forum specific to my router, and was able to ask a few questions in there. Within an hour, somebody had replied and was able to show me a page they had set up that walked you through the whole thing step by step. It seems a lot of the settings on it you just leave alone, all you have to do is follow their instructions and then enter the WEP key were they tell you, (guess ...
...removed my old modem and software and away I went. Then I went downstairs to my shed to set up the other end. Erm… ok, now what? I had bought a little wireless USB "dongle" and assumed I just plugged it in, and that was it? Nope. It detected the network, but the signal strength was very low.. odd, as the base unit is only about 60 feet away upstairs, and it has two antenna on it. I went back upstairs and moved the router to the other side of the ...

Speedtouch 516v6

Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Unreliable

Cab I say that I'm not a big fan of these routers! However, they are good solid performers if you want a cheap router thats fairly easy to configure. I have had problems with them when uploading templates from time to time, which has ended up completed knackering the router and I've ended up with a rather useless paperweight. I particually find the menu layout very poor, unlike 90% of routers where u can easily find what your after with this you ...
