DECISION1

Since 1986 when Rover introduced this luxury family classic, there have been many changes. The angular styling of 1986 was changed in 1992 with the introduction of the mark 2. This model had a more curved boot and the bonnet design was changed to incorporate a chrome grille which was a common feature on older Rovers. The next upgrade about 3 years later saw specification changes and a different dash design.

In the past four years I have owned 3 Rover 820's. One manual and two automatics.
Having worked in a Rover garage for a number of years, I was well aware that there had been problems with oil leaks from the cylinder head gasket and of course the horrendous repair cost (over £600) if the cambelt breaks. The oil leak could be put up wiih as was normally only minor, however, late model 820's from 1996 on did not have this problem because of modifications made by Rover. If you should decide to buy one of these cheap classics ask if the cambelt has been changed, if not change it (about £100.00). Apart from normal run of the mill items like brake pads these cars are super reliable. In my four years of ownership never a problem at 10000 mls per year. The spec on the later models is superb with wood capping on dash and doors, air bags, abs, power steering, electric windows, central locking, tilt and slide sun roof and much more. My 2 owner 1997 820 taxed and tested cost me £500 BARGAIN.

Fuel consumption is not bad at about 30mpg after all it is a big card. Acceleration on 820 auto can be sluggish from a standing start but it is a big car. If you want speed you are probably better off going for the 827 v6
