We brought our 1.4 Rover 214i, 5door nearly two years ago, aged about 3 years when we brought it.
Our requirements when we started searching for a car were that it had to be affordable (under 6 grand) and have five doors, and three diagonal seat belts in the back.

We brought our 1.4 Rover 214i, 5door nearly two years ago, aged about 3 years when we brought it.
Our requirements when we started searching for a car were that it had to be affordable (under 6 grand) and have five doors, and three diagonal seat belts in the back.
We had first visited a Renault garage, where they had a megane suitable. The sales person had decided that we would buy it. However, promptly told us my husband and I couldn't both test drive it as they had to accompany us, and there was not enough room for our children. The sales person was rude - insulted the car we were trading in, and was not prepared to budge at all, not even offer a free service instead of a price reduction.
So we went to our local Rover Dealer. As soon as we got there, we were greeted like human beings. We were handed the keys to the car, offered help in fitting our childrens safety seats and waved off the forecourt for a test drive. I nearly brought the car as a thank you!
The car itself was very practical. It had five doors, 3 seatbelts, central locking, power steering, just to mention a few of the bonus's our last car didn't have. This was really a step up in the world!
When we were satisfied we were happy with the car itself, looked over the body work etc, checked service history, we were happy to negoitate.
They didn't budge on the price. What they did, however, was offer us a thousand pounds trade in on our other vehicle (an old Volvo 440, which was due for the scrap heap!). We were offered 200 pounds by Renault. In my mind this saving would cover the first service... and the second...! They also said they would do a full service on it (even though it was not due for a few months), and re-new the mot.
A good start.
When we went to collect the car, they tried to put some petrol in for us to get us going, with their compliments. However the petrol cap was stuck! They broke the lock in trying to take it off!! Not a problem, they took our key number, gave us a temporary stopper and got us on our way. Two days later, had a phone call to advise us they had the replacement ready.
Two months down the line, after some very happy motoring, the exhaust started making some very strange noises!! I got a quote, and it was just over a hundred and fifty pounds!! Quite a shock, as I knew this is a servicable item not covered on most warranties on used cars. When I spoke the gentleman who had sold us the car, and expressed my disapointment that this wear had not been spotted in the service (I was really just testing the water, to see if any assistance would be offered), they apologised and offered to pay for half of the replacement exhaust! This was customer services and a half!! Beyond expectations.
We intend to keep our car until it dies - which hopefuly will be a good few years yet, but when the time comes to replace it, I would not hesitate in returning to my local Rover dealer.
The car is easy to care for - has a decievingly large boot - easily capable of holding both my shopping for a family of five, and my friend who I give a lift to weekly, for a family of 4. When we go on our Uk holidays, we fit a roofbox, and the car is still very happy to nip along the motorway. I have found it to be very efficient money wise, and a very comfortable car to drive. Easy to park with the power steering, and the remote control central locking a dream, when approaching the car with 3 kids!
The price I paid was average, but the trade in I was offered made it a good deal. The customer service I was offered made it an exceptional deal.
I would love to give the name of my dealer, as I belive praise for them should be shouted from the rooftops, but am reluctant to do so for my privacy. (Sorry - I have read too many horror stories!)
Overall, I would definately recommend the Rover 214 to families with small children, as a safe, reliable car.
Advantages: None spring to mind Disadvantages: Too many to mention
I have a Rover 216 from Sewards in Portsmouth.I am a motability customer. This means I am a second class customer.I lease a car from them for three years on the motability scheme. The car is not free, they take all of my allowance and in return I get the car for three years, free servicing, free insurance and change my car every three years. It should also include a courtesy car when mine is in for a service or off the road, I have never been able to ... ...be treated like this. The Rover is my fourth motability car, I have never been treated so bad ever before. When I was at the test drive stage they could not do enough, and even gave me flowers, but as soon as you drive off that forecourt they do not want to know. They make me feel like a nuisence when at the end of the day its not even my car,it belongs to them, they have to have the car back and sell it on when my three years are up ...

Advantages: I got what I asked for! Disadvantages: They initially tried selling what they had, not what I wanted.
...to sell my R Reg Rover 216 Cabriolet and buy a more practical, cheaper, but still reliable, "family" car. I decided to take it back to the dealer where I first purchased the car to see if they would buy it back and for how much.
SMC at Bath Road, Slough were very helpful considering I told them that my next car was not necessarily going to be a Rover and that I needed at least £1000 in my pocket after selling the Cabriolet and purchasing the next ... ...car. The 5 door, Rover 414SI looked good - platinum silver which apparently is a sought after colour, drove well - P registration, one lady owner from new, 1 year's MOT, full service history and was the right price - £3995.
Purchasing the car from Rover meant I was automatically entitled to a 3 month Warranty. However, before collecting the car, I was telephoned with a superb offer of 1 year's warranty for £100 which I snatched up!
All in all I ...

Advantages: Only if your buying a new MGF Disadvantages: No Customer care.
Customer care seems to be a word of a bye gone age! What ever happened to the statement that the customer is always right? At Perrys in huddersfield, they certainly seem to have forgotten what customer care is, in fact I think that thier motto is "customer...Who cares." The level of service from thier used car salesmen is lower than a snakes belly, I would not go to Perrys now if they offered me the deal of a life time, although I must say that my ... ...impressed by the level of service he was shown. Perhaps it was because he spent over twenty thousand on a new car, where-as I was only spending eight thousand on a second hand vehicle. If you are a buisness man, then yes Perrys is the place for you, but forget it otherwise, dont get stung as I did. ...

Advantages: Can't think of any at the moment Disadvantages: Salesmen with no concept of customer service.
...you would have thought that Rover dealers would be falling over themselves to make a sale, not at Dales of Redruth they're not. I went in with the intention of buying one of the six secondhand MGFs they had on the forecourt ranging in price from £10,999 for an N reg to £17,999 for an S reg top of the range VVC model. A not too insignificant amount. After looking at all six cars no one had approaced me so I hung around the main front door and despite ... ...desk next to a nice Rover 45. Despite the fact that I was in a shirt and tie (both times) I seemed to be someone so disgusting that the salesman would not make eye contact with me prefering to continue with some paperwork despite me standing right in front of him. When I finally got to talking to him I explained what I was after and that I had a vehicle to trade in. Depending on what I got for that I would have one of the six on the forecourt. He ...

...it hasnt with my local rover dealer in kent. I have a very reliable rover 200 v - reg and everytime I go in my dealer to get things done it nearly always causes agro. I have owned many large, spacious and comfortable vehicles; both 4x4s and cars (Mitsibishi Shoguns, Mercedes...). However, now on my second Discovery (a '52 Reg' TD5 GS) I can safely say that the Land Rover has blitzed the others. It offers a unique blend of ruggedness and comfort without sacrificing luxury. When I bought my first Discovery, again a TD5 back in 2000, friends of mine were sceptical of my choice of Diesel over the V8 petrol. However, when they experienced the smoothness and adequacy of the Turbocharged 5-cylinder unit they quickly congratulated me on my choice. Also in terms of MPG the TD5 offers around 25-30 compared to the horrific consumption of the V8. Indeed it is the coupling of the engine and drivetrain which ultimately makes the Disco TD5, the abundance of torque is after all fundamental to any 4x4 especially ...
Advantages: 4 wheel drive with lowering prices Disadvantages: A little soft on cornering
If you have the money to spare and are looking for a car that has Looks - Style - Comfort - Reliability and a real name that's had a good following over the years, I would highly recommend the Land rover Discovery.
The biggest asset at the moment is that the price throughout the range has been reduced dramatically due to the recent changes in importation and dealership, and if you shop around you really can pick up an excellent deal, Even Secondhand.
With the TD5 ( Turbo Diesel ), you get real quality even with the earlier models. The only drawback with the earlier ones is that the ride tends to be a bit bumpy, but having said that the early models are more economical to run in general averaging 30 - 35 MPG.
The more recent models ( I.E 1997 Onward ) usually run at around 25 - 30 MPG, But obviously they are much more luxurious ...
Advantages: quite economcial, very comfortable, loaded with equipment Disadvantages: nothing yet
This is the first 4x4 I have owned. The other cars on my drive are Japanese import sports cars which are low and very very fast. This is to some extent the complete opposite but is a wonderful experience.
Our car was delivered in shining black with a black leather interior with .4 of a mile on the clock.
Looks
The car looks bigger than it actually is. It has a strong resemblance to its Range Rover big brother. It is lengthwise about the same size as the car it replaces for us, a Peugeot 407. But its height and rugged looks make it look a far bigger proposition though. The car has some tasteful silver coloured vents and trim which break up the all black look along with some tasty 19" alloys.
Interior
The interior is superb. Comfortable seats adjust to fit all sizes and have enough support to stop you getting back ache ...
