After 64 years I have well and truly joined the 21st century. First it was a PC to take the place of my old Amiga and now for the first time in my life I am the owner of a credit card. If I carry on like this I can see me getting a mobile phone next or maybe even a video, but I would have to find a five year old to set it up.

Up to press I have very rarely bought anything on credit as I worked on the principle that if I couldn’t pay for something in cash or by cheque then I couldn’t have it. But in this day and age when you cannot use cash or even cheques for Internet purchases I was left with one of two options. Do without or get with it.

So on one of my rare visits to the Royal Bank Of Scotland I asked about getting a credit card for myself. The smiling young lady behind the bulletproof glass gave me a form to fill in, which I did on the spot and returned it. Two weeks to the day a letter arrived full of bumf and my piece of plastic, a Visa Card with a credit limit of ……. Nah I’m not telling you. All I will say that is sufficient for the time being but I won’t be able to use it to buy a car. The limit can be increased after six months.

Once I get a pin number for the card I will also be able to use it as a cash card in any machine that is Visa compatible. The bumf informed me that if I didn’t like the pin number, which will arrive by separate post shortly, I could ring a particular number and change it to one of my choice.

The card comes with Internet protection should someone get a hold of my number and buy stuff without my knowledge or consent. There is a 24/365 service for reporting stolen or lost credit cards. My Visa card also affords me some extra protection should I buy something that turns out to be a lemon and the shop stubbornly refuses a refund.

There were no charges for the card or the setting up of the credit account and it gives me the possibility of using the bank’s money, totally interest free, for a period of up to 56 days. In fact the possibility arises that I could buy something on behalf of someone using the credit card, who then pays me the full amount in cash, which I stick in a bank account to gain up to 56 days of interest, which I then withdraw to settle my credit account. I could actually make money from my credit card. OK I know that’s going a bit OTT but the possibility exists and should the situation arise with my family I will explore that route. I would gain up to £9 on a £1,000 purchase. Not a fortune but!!!

I will get a statement every month which gives me the option of settling the full account before 25 days after the date of the statement and incurring no interest charges whatsoever or paying the stated minimum (no less than £5) and being charged at an interest rate of 0.319% per month for the balance. I can use my piece of plastic to, in effect, get a bank loan but even if I repay the loan within the required time period I will still get charged interest at 1.385% per month, so this is an option that I will not be taking up.

The RBS sent me a cheque book to use against my credit account but they will charge me 1.5% of the value of the cheque should I do so.

I don’t know what other deals there are for credit cards from other sources but the one that I got from the Royal Bank of Scotland seems quite reasonable to me.

Review of Royal Bank Of Scotland Credit Card by raymie

Advantages: Big Bank
Disadvantages: Slow unreliable

Please note that the following commments relate to my experience a couple of years ago now. Things many have improved but I suspect not. For manuy years I had an RBS card, laterly the gold one. As soon as the gold card was introduced problems started to occurr. What I found happened almost every month was that the statements arrived AFTER the last day for interest free payments. I complained about this many times and was brushed off with the excuse ...
...other mail tended to arrived so late. On some occassions the statments never arrived at all and I had to request duplicates. The long and short of all this was that rater than pay off the balance before incurring any changes (as I tended to do) they kept applying charges since I always ended up paying after the interest free period. A more cynical person might have suspected that this was the real reason behind the statement delays <grin>. There ... Read review

RBS Card - Reliable Brilliant Service
Review of Royal Bank Of Scotland Credit Card by the_feline

Advantages: Excellent friendly customer service
Disadvantages: none experienced to date

I'm very pleased with my RBS credit card. I applied on-line which didn't take long and within seconds I received approval on-line, including details of my credit limit and a credit agreement to print off there and then. One of the best things about the on-line application was that it was very quick and I had instant peace of mind that my application had been receievd and processed. I returned my completed credit agreement by post that day and a few ...
...couple of cards on line in the past as I tend to switch around to make the most of competetive interest rates. The RBS card has a good introductory rate - one of the best at the moment. The speed of their application service has to be the best I have experienced on line. My account has been running very satisfactorily since the account was opened and I am particularly impressed with the customer service I have received. Being in the Finance industry ... Read review

RBS Credit Card
Review of Royal Bank Of Scotland Credit Card by spott

Advantages: interest free for 6 months
Disadvantages: poor relation of the rbs slow transfers poor customer service

the RBS is an ok bank but the RBS Credit Card (Mastercard) is the poor relation and does not deserve the RBS brand I made some transfers into the RBS credit card at the same time and earlier than my RBS account and a Visa credit card and guess what ... the RBS take days longer for payments to be received to the account. When you call them you have to call the 0870 premium rate number (as opposed to my other banks being 0845 and 0800 nos) Most ...
...is slightly more infuriating than the average. The frustration really hits home when you have to try and have a conversation as the staff struggle with the question 'has any money been paid IN' or 'credited' or 'received' and they are keen to give a lecture about how a payment in was actually a 'refund' (which actually wasn't the case) This frustration is compounded when it transpires they will not willingly help you find your long awaited credit ... Quick review of Royal Bank of Scotland
Review of Royal Bank Of Scotland Credit Card by Reviewerz

I will avoid RBS at all costs. I had a credit card with RBS, but they failed on several occassions to mail monthly statements. Many times, I caught the problem and made a payment anyway. But then one month when they didn't send a bill, I didn't catch it. That ONE time resulted in RBS sending me totally nasty letters, though I made a payment within a few days of the due date. I then simply paid the credit card balance in full to avoid any future problems, since RBS is not reliable with their billing statements. RBS attitudes are horrid and customer service is not in its vocabulary. Employees harass about other services they provide, even though you insist you're not interested.

Quick review of Royal Bank Of Scotland Credit Card
Review of Royal Bank Of Scotland Credit Card by KJPfluger

I have the RBS Platinum Mastercard. I took advantage of their 2.99% until balance is paid off deal. Everything was fine for the first couple of years. In June '07, my daughter was in the hospital for 5 days and things that had arrived in the mail got mislaid. Among the mislaid items was my RBS bill. I paid it 2 days late and lost the 2.99% promo rate, which I expected and was charged a $39. late fee. I had not been late EVER with a payment since I opened the account 5 years ago. Well, they would not return my promo rate, which I was not surprised, but they refused to refund the $39. fee. This is absurd! ONE late payment in 5 years of steady use. PAY ON TIME!!!!

...-paid Debit Card. I recommend Paypal's as you can avoid top fees if topped up via your bank account on their site. Of course other cards are available but they all charge for topping up along with the Paypal card if topped up at a Pay Point (£1). Also paypal's has a chip and pin and is issued by The Royal Bank of Scotland. You have to pay for the cards however no credit check is required.... Read review

One Card.. A Million Rip Offs.
Review of Barclaycard by  purpleangel

Advantages: Good level of customer service
Disadvantages: high interest

...I’ve had a Barclaycard for about three years. There was no special reason for choosing them over a different card, except for the fact that I applied and they accepted me. Until recently I was quite happy with my card, I spent the money, they sent me a bill, and after I picked myself up of the floor, I paid it. I have had reason to telephone their customer service line on a couple of occasions and could usually find any information by pressing a few numbers, the times I did speak to a customer service representative, I found them to be polite and helpful. However, I have recently become disillusioned. It started with the Royal Bank of Scotland Credit Card advertisement on television. It shows the interest rate of their Credit Card compared to other cards available. Barclaycard is top of the list for high interest rates... Read review
