It is indeed a very sad day in motorsport to see an excellent performance by a driver about to win be taken away at the last split second by a fixed team result. For those unaware of the events that unfolded in Austria’s Spielberg A1 race of 2002, the No. 2 Ferrari driver, Rubens Barrichello was asked to move over and let his team mate win seconds before he was about to go over the finish line. This opinion is dedicated to Rubens Barrichello’s race win in Spielberg, Austria 2002.
Rubens Barrichello is the second most famous Brazilian racing driver to enter Formula One after the late Aryton Senna. Rubens born in Sao Paolo, Brazil made his F1 debut in1993 with the Jordan team. His first year with Jordan did not prove too successful points wise, with him only scoring points once and not even attaining a podium finish. However, 1994 was to prove a key turning point in Barrichello’s life where he too had a horrific crash during practice and tragically, it was also the year in which Senna and Ratzenburger lost their lives in a fatal car crash. Barichello stayed with the Jordan team for 4 years before moving on to Stewart team in 1997. During his first year at Stewart he was beset by many technical problems, although he did try hard as a driver it seemed he was always the one with bad luck, his car giving way right at the last lap.
His luck was to change when Rubens joined the ranks of the prancing horse, the red passionate racing cars adored by millions around the world; he was now part of the Ferrari team, being the No. 2 driver to Michael Schumacher. He was very emotional and excited to join Ferrari and raised the hopes of thousands of Brazilian fans when he was flying the country’s name high on the Ferrari. He was the ideal partner for Schumacher and they worked well together. It was at Ferrari where Rubens managed to win his first ever grand Prix at the 2000 German Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher on the other hand crashed out at the first corner. Although Michael Schumacher did not finish the race the fans saw one red Ferrari come home to win, and that’s all they wanted. It was a very special moment for Barrichello..his first Grand Prix win, with tears in his eyes he dedicated his win to late Aryton Senna.
Recently Rubens contract with Ferrari has been renewed for 2 years taking his drive up to 2004. So far this season in 2002, Barrichello has made a superb performance in qualifying both at Barcelona and Austria. At Austria he was dominant all weekend and in superb form taking pole position from Michael (who was dogged with problems and had to use the T-car for qualifying) who managed to qualify in 3rd position, with his brother Ralf Schumacher in front in 2nd position on the grid.
At the start of the race Barrichello made a good start, so did Michael, moving up to 2nd Position. Throughout the race Barrichello made a solid performance, the car was performing and handling beautifully. His pit stops were perfect, he made no errors , even during nasty incident when the safety car that had to bought out after Heidfeld’s and Sato’s nasty accident whereby Heidfeld apparently lost control possibly due to dodgy brakes or driver error dragged Sato along with him, with Sato’s car falling to bits! (fortunately Sato was OK, shows side-impact bar improvements to an F1 car are working), throughout the eventful 2002 Austrian grand prix Barrichello remained calm and took it easy even when tyre temperature may be low and remained in control.
On the last lap of the Austrian Grand Prix Barrichello remained in the lead with Michael following close behind, then just as both the Ferrari cars were approaching the start/finish line and we had hopes of seeing Barrichello take the chequered flag and claim his well-deserved 2nd ever Grand prix win…then shock!! Barichello eases off and lets Michael Schumacher cross the line first and take the win of the Austrian Grand Prix. Fans worldwide could not believe what they saw take place after a stunning drive and performance by Barrichello all weekend and throughout the race suddenly slowing down to let Michael through. This decision according to Ferrari was team decision made by the head of Ferrari. As the cars swapped race positions the winning was greeted by boos and hisses from the crowd, and quite rightly so! Fixing a race result is not sport and has destroyed the fun, drama and healthy racing competition between drivers. Ferrari really did not have to do this. It si known Michael has never won at the Austria circuit but just handing him the win is no answer, Michael himself is a talented driver and is perfectly capable of winning races himself, after all he has had 57 other Grand Prix wins (58 on paper! if one includes this Austrian Grand Prix). None of the drivers, neither Micheal Schumacher or Barrichello were happy with this Ferrari business management team decision.Michael says he was surprised by the result too. Schumacher was ahead 21 points in the Championship anyway there was no need to fix the result and spoil millions of viewers racing quality time.
So the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix Result for the History Books on paper is:-
In reality though we all know Barrichello is the real star and Winner at Austria 2002.
To leave you with a quote from Barrichello: “I am going through a period of a very good time in my life - as a better person, a better driver," said Barrichello afterwards. "My determination will get more wins, there was no point arguing. Michael gave me the trophy that I will take home. I am happy about that."
On that note, Barrichello certainly has a lot more to come and many victories will come his way, he driving the F1 2002 Ferrari car superlatively, the aerodynamics, the tyres are fantastic, the car is fantastic, he is fantastic!
Advantages: Experienced.Cool. Pleasant personality Disadvantages: Lacks aggressive instinct
Rubens Barrichello, a very popular figure on the Formula I circuit,is now driving for Ferrari who are,of course,a very competitive team. The Brazilian is burdened by having to shoulder Brazilian expectations of glory following the sad demise of the great Ayrton Senna. That a hard burden to shoulder for anyone.Essentially Rubens, who has driven for Jordan and Jaguar among others,is a mature, experienced, and competent driver. He is cool under pressure ... ...same team as that flawed genius. However, I suspect that at the end of the day the killer instinct is lacking and I feel that Rubens will be near to the top but will not quite make it all the way. Perhaps he is not really ruthless enough. Time will tell! ...

Advantages: Normally a very reliable driver. Disadvantages: In the shadow of Michael Schumacher.
Rubens Barrichello is a brilliant F1 driver who often is overlooked because of his position in the shadow of Michael Schumacher. This Brazilian driver is normally a very consistent, reliable driver unless his Latin temperament takes over. At the Brazilian Grand Prix (2001) the local fans had great expectations for their local hero, who as a child, used to climb over the fence at the Interlagos race track to watch the racing cars. Now at 28 I think ... ...Normally the professional attitude of Rubens keeps him totally focused on the race, but the fanatical fans of Sao Paulo did not leave him alone. In the qualifying session his Ferrari had terrific understeer problems which meant that he was only placed sixth on the grid. Then during the formation lap for the race his engine failed and he had to run back to the pits and get into the spare car. With only 15 seconds to spare he left the pit lane and ...

Advantages: Pretty good in wet. Disadvantages: Not a front-runner in raw speed terms. Doe-like naivety made him easy prey for Ferrari.
Barrichello’s career to date has been one of mixed results – he has never been consistently good or bad. He has spent most of his time in uncompetitive cars, particularly during his first years with Jordan, which perhaps clouded his early promise. Nonetheless his ascension to the heights of Ferrari in 2000 yielded little by way of impressive drives. The earliest Grand Prix in which Barrichello clearly made his mark was the drenched 1993 ... ...Ayrton Senna demoralised his Williams rivals, Barrichello demonstrated remarkable wet-weather skill and would have scored highly had his car not let him down in the closing laps. Throughout 1993 the second Jordan seat alongside Barrichello was filled by a number of different drivers, making it difficult to draw worthwhile comparisons. His first long-term team mate was the abrasive Eddie Irvine, who clearly unsettled Barrichello in the two-and-a-bit ...

Advantages: Used to be Passionate about his racing Disadvantages: Into evil tactics with Ferrari and doesn't realise that Ferrari are SCUM!
Rubens Barrichello used to be a committed driver in Stewart Ford trying to do his best for the team but since he did a swap with Eddie Irvine into Ferrari…he hasn’t been the same.
Since he has been at the evil team of Ferrari he has gotten himself into the nasty tactics which comes with the package of Ferrari. Especially in the 2001 season where he has had three shunts all being his fault. They involved Heinz-Harold Frentzen in Australia ... ...out of the race and Rubens was in 18th position and he managed to win the race. On the podium he had his Brazilian flag in his hands and was crying with pride. But that was only because Michael was already out. He didn’t take part in any dirty tactics devised by Ross Brawn, it was just excellent driving in a high performance car. Rubens is an excellent driver but has been brainwashed by Ferrari and I’m afraid to say that he will probably ...

Advantages: Brazilian bred so has the skills Disadvantages: Overpowered by dominating team mate.
It was very emotional for Rubens on the podium on Sunday. I think he feels that his mentor , Ayrton Seena was looking down on him that day. What a great performance from 18th on the grid. It is especially pleasing that he won the race in the end through his own skill. I thin kthat if Schummi had kept going, he would have been forced to pull aside for him to let the german win his home GP. Such is the power of Michael Schumacher. Typical attitude ... ...should try looking in the mirror (literally) before pointing the finger. He moved over on Fisichella and forced him off and then blamed Giancarlo for it!!! When will this guy ever say, I made a mistake. He wont and we all know why??? Because everyone tells him how good he is all the time. I hope he loses this year as a point proven. You cant win with buying success.
Well done Rubens, we are all proud of you!!! ...

Advantages: Good driver pairing Disadvantages: Technical failures this season Lot of retirements
After a wonderful third position in the Constructor's Championship last year big things were expected of the very popular Northamptonshire-based Jordan team in 2000. However, the signs are that Jordon are looking less competitive now than they were last season when,eg,brilliant team strategy saw Heinz-Harold Frentzen make the most of a wet race to claim victory in the French grand prix ahead of Mika Hakkinen and RubensBarrichello.
The driver pairing at Jordan currently is a strong one with the immensely talented Frentzen and the up and coming Jarno Trulli. No doubt the team do miss the vast experience of Damon Hill.In the current season there have been a series of technical failures which have brought on retirements. They too have not had the best of luck.! ...

Advantages: Great driver Disadvantages: Lack of experience
His first season has been extraordinary only bettered currently by Button as far as the "newcomers" are concerned. As much as I am not a supporter, I am always pleased to see the Arrows team do well. Pedro DeLaRosa has amazing potential and has potentially a very fast car as far as straight line speed is concerned.
I was disappointed with the Spaniard at Hockenheim as I felt he could have done more to stop the flying RubensBarrichello despite the fact that I am a Ferrari Fanatic!
He has been consistently (well almost) in the points and he and the team have come a very long way since last season. He mirrors the driving style of that of Takagi in 1998 who retired from F1 racing 1999. I hope that De La Rosa gets the driver next year although I think his Spanish compatriot Gene will find it hard to get a seat next season.
He ...
