I was very surprised when out shopping for Christmas presents for my children to see this game in a toy shop as i thought that it wasn't made any more. I played this game all this time with my friend almost 20 years ago (I'm showing my age now). I would go down to her house where we would sit and play game after game. Needless to say that i loved it. So i was more than happy to buy this for my 12 year old son as one of his Christmas presents and at £16.95 it wasn't too expensive compared to some other games.
So what do you get for your money: 104 tiles. The tiles are cream in colour with the numbers 1-13 on them in four different colours(black, yellow, blue and red). There are two sets of each colour. There is also two joker tiles these are different for the number tiles as the have faces on them one red face and one black face. You also get 4 racks one for each player to put your tiles on and a set of instructions.
Object of the game: The object of the game is to be the first person to get rid of all there tiles and say the word Rummikub.
How to play: The game is for 2-4 players. All the tiles are put face down on the table(make sure you have got a big playing area as it can take up a lot of space). Everyone takes one tile each and the person with the highest number goes first. Then the tiles are put back face down and mixed well.
Everyone then picks 14 tiles each and places them on there rack ready for play. The remainder of the tiles are put to one side as a stock pile. On your first turn you can only play tiles that add up to 30 or more( if you cannot do this you must take a tile from the stock pile and that is the end of your turn, however on your next turn you must still put down tiles to the value of 30) and at least 3 tiles must be played in every turn. After the first turn you can put tiles down that add up to a lesser value.
There is two types of set that is allowed to be played: Run: this is a set of number that go after one another eg: 1,2,3 or 10, 11, 12, 13.Run must be all the same colour. The maximum number of tiles in this set is 13. Group: a set of 3 or 4 tile of the same number but different colours. The maximum number of tiles in this set is 4. *The jokers can be used as any number or any colour of tile and can be replaced and re used by any player if the have the correct tile to replace it.
Each player has one minute to make as many sets as they can. If they cannot make a set within the time limit then there turn ends and they must pick up three tiles from the stock tiles.
The game continues until someone calls Rummikub, at the end of the game the players who have tiles left on there rack add up the value of the tiles and that is give as a minus score for them but is given to the winner as a plus score. When everyone has decided to stop playing the person with the highest score is the winner.
In my opinion this is a great family game although the age group for it is 8 years and over i found that my 12 year old took a few games to get the hang of playing it. Once he knew how to play it correctly he really enjoyed it. I think that children younger than 12 might have problems picking this game up .
The manufacturers of this game are Tomy their address is: Tomy UK Ltd European Headquarters Sutton Surrey England SM1 1LD
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Advantages: Enjoyable, some luck and some careful skill, can be played by people of all ages Disadvantages: The regular version is rather expensive to buy for a simple set of tiles
