Three hours and forty-two may not be world record time for a marathon, but Runners World made it possible for me to achieve what seemed like an impossible goal.

There are two types of people--self-motivated and those they can only do things to an externally set timetable. I fall firmly in the latter category and the Runners World marathon training timetable was invaluable in my training. With a Personal Best of one hour fifty for a half marathon my dream time was under four hours. The schedule in Runners World got me to 3:42 and I improved my half marathon time to 1:27 during the build up period.

So the training schedules are great, what about the rest of the magazine? Well the features are generally well written and the news pages often pick up interesting items that other news media miss. The Jeers, Tears and Cheers section gives a nice summary of the running world. My only complaints are:
  • I live in the North East and the events listings seem very South East centric
  • There is a sister title in the States that supplies much of the editorial and sometimes it seems a little irrelevant to us across “the pond”
  • Reebok shoes never get a good write up. I got injuries from Brooks Beasts (stress fracture from lack of cushioning) and my Asics Gels but each of my pairs of Reeboks have been great. Am I the only one who thinks so?
