I studied BA Russian and Soviet Studies at Portsmouth University from 1988 to 1990. Unfortunately, I did not complete the four year course, due to getting married and then having a baby a year later.
The course was the reason I chose to go to Portsmouth, moving 210 miles from my home in Lincoln. I have been interested in the USSR and the Russian language since following the successes of the Soviet team (especially the gymnasts) at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
I became fascinated with the Cyrillic alphabet and wanted to learn the language. I had an opportunity to do this with a short night school course as a teenager, which whetted my appetite to study it further.
One of the advantages of the course at Portsmouth was that you could learn the language ab initio. The other parts of the course sounded fascinating too, as it included a wide range - the history of the USSR, the geography, politics, economics, sociology, Soviet literature and linguistics.
When I began the course, I found I was useless at economics and found no interest in linguistics either, but the other parts of the course were much better. I soon chose to concentrate on language, literature and politics and I got a lot out of these subjects.
It is a shame I dropped out of the course, as I do think it is the best course around for that subject, with a much broader structure than most degree courses which just concentrate on the Russian language.
Advantages: Experienced and native speaking tutors Disadvantages: It's not easy... by any means.

The first thing I have to mention about Russian language tutoring at UCL is that Ciao have it listed in the wrong category - this is taught not by members of the language faculty but by members of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, just down the road, an different and specialist department with an obvious bias!
My Russian training was part of my MA course in History at SSEES, and whilst a language is not compulsory for Post-Graduate students, it is compulsory for Under-Graduate students, all of whom spend, I believe, at least one year of their course abroad. SSEES also offers many other languages on which I cannot comment.
Russian is a difficult language to learn and you begin, unsurprisingly, with the alphabet. My course was extra intensive - meaning that I had to learn 2000 words and all ...

Advantages: I can spell correctly again Disadvantages: Price is high if you don't search around.
chatted to him tonight whilst leafing through the dictionary. Not one spelling mistake. I didn't let him know that I had treated myself to a dictionary either, so I am feeling quite smug at the moment.
· The dictionary is very thick and comprises of 1985 pages. I am using the 2001 version. It is very nice to look at with a red background and blue overlay. Words on the cover in white and blue. Numbers in gold. It looks very professional.
· Apart from the obvious use of correct spellings and meanings the dictionary is full of other sections that are both interesting and useful.
· Some first names include
Fiona, Gaelic meaning fair.
Nathan means Gift of God
Pandora means every gift
Simon means either hearing or snub nosed.
· Some phrases and quotations although these are in Latin.
· The Greek alphabet.
· The Russian ...
