PRESSURE GUARD
I was bought this item about a month ago as a present, and can definitely say it works, and has saved me money. Once I installed them on the car, about two weeks later, I had a slow puncture and the clear indicators gave me an almost immediate alert to the fact, which enabled me to get it fixed straight away, without the possibility of having a complete blow out on the motorway which could have caused a nasty accident.
Fitting them was quick and literally took seconds for each tyre, and once fitted, they constantly measure the tyre pressure.
Most people will tell you that really you should be checking your tyre pressures at least on a weekly basis, but if
you are being honest, do you actually do it? Other things seem to take priority, such as you haven't got time, you can't find the pressure gauge, it's a dirty job, and the tyres 'look' all right. However, with the pressure guard valve caps, you know immediately if your tyres have lost pressure.
Driving with under inflated tyres can be dangerous, costly and is also illegal. Did you know for example, that under inflated tyres can decrease your miles per gallon (or should I now be seeing kilometres per litre) by 15%. Tyre life can be reduced by 30% and drivers risk up to 3 points on their driving licence and a £2500 fine PER TYRE! Or putting it another way, cars with badly inflated tyres could be wasting over £300 per year - my Pressure Guard was bought for £11.99 - a potentially lucrative investment I think.
FITTING INSTRUCTION
To start off with, you need to ensure that your tyres are at the correct pressure - simple to do if you have a tyre pump with an indicator. A bit of advice here, is if you ever check your tyre pressures, you should be doing it when the tyres are cold. If you don't have a foot pump, simply visit your local petrol station. If you are not sure of the correct tyre pressure, this you should be found in your car's manual. Most cars will also have a label or a sticker somewhere on the car indicating what the correct pressures are. Simply take off the old dust caps and replace them with the Pressure Guard cap, ensuring they are screwed on tightly. Now here comes the clever bit. The red and green indicators inside the cap will rise and stop perfectly level - (if they don't, the instructions say to re-tighten and flick/tap the caps). And that is it - if I can do it, anybody can.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOUR TYRE PRESSURES FALL?
Once they are fitted, all it takes is a quick glance at each tyre valve capto see if the tyres are at the correct pressure. If you see that the green indicator has fallen back below the red indicator, then your tyre has lost pressure. The instructions say that this movement starts at approximately 2-psi loss, with the green and red gap increasing as the loss increases. Trust me, if you have a slow puncture as I did, the visual warning is obvious.
PACK CONTENTS
Each pack comes with 4 indicator valves, and at first, I thought this was odd as most cars do have a spare wheel, and would have thought that 5 valves would be a better deal. However, the manufactures state that they do not work on a spare wheel in the boot or on a vehicle that is parked for an extended period of time such as a caravan left on the driveway over the winter months. As to the reasons why that is, I could not tell you.
The manufactures also state that they fit all standard tyres from 20 - 42 psi, although they do a similar product for tyres in excess of 42 psi. Like I have previously indicated, my set was bought for £11.99, and have seen them in various motoring stores and shops. The manufacturers are Auto Unique Ltd, and their web page is at www.auto-unique.co.uk
DISDADVANTAGES
Although they have not been taken, there is a remote possibility that some 'scallywag' decides to take them for themselves off your tyres. The only other thing that I have found, especially in the winter months, is that you do need to give them an occasional wipe to ensure that the red and green indicators are visible.
