The 105mm focal length of this lens means that this lens serves both for telephoto and macro purposes - it deals with both of these well. For macro the lens is able to take pin-sharp photos from as little as around 15cm away, and the low aperture means that a tripod isn't always necessary for moving close-up subjects.
The autofocus works relatively well, however the lens sometimes has trouble focusing on objects that are particularly small - I've found that holding my finger in front of the lens to give it something to focus on usually deals with this problem effectively.
As a telephoto lens, it does it's job, though the fixed focal length isn't practical if you're planning on doing a lot of telephoto work. I'm sure most are willing to let this go, however, as the lens is sold primarily as a macro lens.
