I bought this lens to go with a 5D when I upgraded from a crop sensor which rendered all my cheap lenses useless. It was a compromise (and a stepping stone) up to buying the Canon L version. However, I don't think I'll be trading this one in for a very long time.
The image quality is easily comparable to the L series 24-70mm with good edge sharpness and low CA. Autofocus is of a reasonable speed, but is as noisy as a plane coming into land! However, nobody notices the noise when I shoot weddings, so it must be mostly in my head!
The manual focus ring is chunky and easy to hold, making it good for using for macro work on a tripod. However, don't be fooled! Sigma call this a macro, but in reality it just focusses a little closer than most lenses. I actually tend to use my 50mm f1.8 for close up work rather than this.
Having said that, this lens remains on my camera for most of the time, and has survived well in my handbag being rubbed against sets of keys and all sorts, the coating on the outside of the lens is good quality and you'll have problems damaging it easily.
Fantastic all rounder, would be a great compliment to the 70-200mm f2.8 lens.

This lens covers focal lengths from 24mm ultra wide angle to 70mm medium telephoto and provides a large f2.8 aperture at all focal lengths. Its design employs three aspherical lens elements to minimize spherical aberration, astigmatism and sagittal comma flare. The use of two SLD (The Special Low Dispersion) glass elements results in excellent correction of chromatic aberration and provides a high level of optical performance and 24-70mm F2.8 EX Aspherical DG DF has high contrast and resolution. The lens also incorporates Dual Focus mechanism. It is easy to hold the lens, since the focusing ring does not rotate during auto focusing, and yet provides a wide focus ring for easy to use manual focus. Since the front of the lens does not rotate, it allows the use of a flower shaped "Perfect Hood" and facilities the use of polarizing filters. The lens materials used in this new lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.
