A perfect camera for a photography student!
Advantages: wonderful for all aspects of photography Disadvantages: none!
...for the job!
The Canon Eos 500 N was given to me second hand from a photography enthusiast, and I am very lucky to have it. Even though it came without a manual, after a only a few trial shots, I was taking perfect photographs.
The zoom is excellent, and it's very easy to focus manually, or you can use the automatic focus if you're not yet confident with your focusing skills.
Being very lightweight for a film SLR, I find my canon easy to carry ... ...around college. The weight (or lack of it) also makes it perfect for whipping out at a moments notice and compulsively snapping away.
Outdoors, inside and in the studio, the 500 N produced some wonderful prints without too much hassel or effort. It's easy to set the shutter speed and aperture size, turn the flash on or off, or zoom in on your subject. It also works amazingly well with studio flashes!
Because it's a canon, you can fit a range of ...

A reliable rock
Advantages: Sturdiness, image quality and reliability Disadvantages: Weight
...new to say that the Nikon F3 is an excellent camera, indeed it has been known to be so to anyone who is interested in photography and has read a little about cameras. In my personal experience, the F3 has been a trustworthy friend that has accompanied me on many trips throughout the past 10 years. I bought my F3 over 10 years ago and it was second hand, I also have another Nikon camera and 2 Canons, but the F3 is the one I always chose when I don't ... ...grounds.
I use mainly Nikon lenses with it but I very often use a Sigma zoom as well. Although the F3 does not have many of the countless special features that most new SLRs and indeed most new cameras have, I feel that it has more than enough for any serious photographer, it does not have automatic focus, but it does have an automatic metering system which I find to be very reliable in most situations, unless you are shooting in special lightning ...

Cheap 'n' cheerful
Advantages: Easy to use, cheap Disadvantages: No cable release socket, very plasticky
The F60 is a reasonably capable (but fairly basic) entry-level SLR. Discontinued now, but can be bought very cheaply secondhand. The body has a very plasticky feel to it; the plastic is slightly textured, but it isn't covered with any grippy substance (eg. rubber) at all. This makes the camera feel cheap (which it is) and fragile.
The camera has a fair amount of preset shooting modes (this could be good for a beginner) in addition to the usual P, ... ...30 secs - 1/2000th sec + B, flash sync is 1/125th sec. The motor wind is slow (only 1 fps), with continuous drive only available in "sport/action" mode (as is continuous AF).
Being an entry level model; the F60 only works properly with either AF, AF-D, AF-G lenses. AI or AI-S lenses can be used, but the lightmeter won't work. AF-S lenses allow the lightmeter to function, but the AF won't (AF-S lenses are probably beyond the reach of many F60 owners, ...

Nikon D70 - dream camera
Advantages: Quality product from a leading maker Disadvantages: None
...looked cheap and nasty.
The Nikon D70 was born and I eagerly awaited the test reports - I was hooked and ordered one. So much was the demand that it took me 7 weeks to get my hands on it.
I have never looked back - I sold all my Canon gear amd have been taking digital photographs ever since.
The quality of the D70, like its handling is superb, it feel right, not to large but again not to small. It has handled any job I have tried without letting ... ...not have a connection for studio flash.
It uses Compact Flash Cardfs - not those horrible flimsy SD cards and by using Sandisk Ultra II cards I can get 73 photographs at the finest setting. Download them, get 'Truprint' to print them for me and clear the card ready for use again.
The excellent lion battery can take approc 500 photographs before requiring recharging.
Simply, if you are thinking of buying a D70 - don't think buy it - you will not ...

BUY BUY BUY!
Advantages: great price Disadvantages: It's not the new D80 but it's a great camera for the price
I love the Nikon F50. It's the camera I recommend for anyone who wants the best camera possible, and they sell for only $650, including lens. Time moves fast in digital cameras. This F50 is better than the D1H for which I paid $4,000 in 2002 and didn't even come with a lens.
The F50 is especially good for kids, sports and action compared to more expensive fixed-lens cameras. I prefer it over everything else from other makers because it's so easy ... ...inputs and the image quality is fantastic. The F50 is a far cry better than any fixed-lens camera, even the much more expensive Sony DSC-R1. Unless you really understand abstract concepts like White Balance fine tuning you'll never find anything missing from the F50. Don't let the low price fool you: it's a great camera and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between prints from a D50 compared to a $5,000 D2X. I've seen 4 x 5 foot enlargements ...
