Olympus E-30. Still not up there with the big boys?
Advantages: Fold out LCD screen, Image Stabilization, Zuiko lens quality, Picture quality, Flash options Disadvantages: Noise in low light, Too many buttons, Badly laid out, Too many gimmicks
...front (or "Sub dial" as Olympus call it) is a little awkward to use and the Mode Dial is on the left side, whereas I like it to be on the right. As you aren't likely to use it without a lens attached, the weight is dependant on your choice of lens but the E-30 body is lighter then the Canon EOS 50D but heavier than the Nikon D90. The menus are easy to read and relatively easy to use, with most of the common functions being available on the "Super ... ...the same battery as the Olympus E-3, which may be a consideration for people with multiple cameras, and the optional battery-grip allows the use of AA batteries. Image Stabilization is via CCD shift and now has 3 modes, with vertical panning being catered for. This is worth up to 5 stops of shutter speed if you believe the Olympus documentation. Picture quality is of course dependant on the lens you are using but I have always found the Zuiko lenses ...

TAKE GREAT QUALITY PICTURES WITH EASE
Advantages: All the facilities of an SLR,but automatic Disadvantages: Cannot fit the larger lenses
This fully automatic camera takes some of the best photos i have seen! It has a 110mm. lens which you can set for telephoto or wide mode.
It is fully self focusing: just point and shoot!
The user can decide whether to use fully automatic capability or simply press the buttons for night mode, sports mode(high speed lens operation),portrait mode or scenery mode. This camera has a built in flash(when looking through
the viewfinder, there is a signal ... ...be easier! The camera takes 35mm. film. in practice,i have found that it particularly likes 200 or 400 speed film. I myself use fuji film, but any make of 35mm. film would be fine. The buyer can also obtain a screw on lens that increases the lens size to 170 mm. to enable the user to take really long distance shots. When i bought my camera, i was given the extra lens as part of the deal. This may still be the case. A great camera!! Get one! I bought ...

Olympous OM2
Advantages: Compact and simple to use Disadvantages: limited functions and expensive add-ons
My Olympus OM2 was purchased in the Mid 1970s, it was one of the most compact SLR Cameras of its day and pioneered TTL metering, this camera is best described as semi automatic with aperture priority. The OM2 still had the option for Manual mode. By today’s standards the OM2 is very basic but being simple to use, offered the enthusiastic armature a professional feel. Typically there was a feast of must have accessories, from motor drive to interchangeable ... ...The most tiresome failing is if one forgets to turn off the camera the batteries quickly expired resulting in lock up. It has stood the test of time although now replaced with an Olympus E400 there is no doubt the OM2 was the best Olympus camera of its day. ...

Olympus OM-10 35mm SLR camera
Advantages: Immensely robust, high-quality camera Disadvantages: The ISO dial lets down the whole equation by being stupidly fiddly to use
A very good camera indeed, but one for the beginner. As all OM cameras are so cheap now on eBay, I'd recommend looking at an OM-20 or 30, which has no need for a manual adaptor to change shutter speeds. The ASA/ISO dial on top of the OM-10 is needlessly fiddly to use - my other OM cameras, a 30 and a 2SP, have a much nicer design which is much easier to use. However, as long as you're prepared to put up with that and having to get an adaptor (unless ... ...the quality of the pictures it produces is very good. As it happens, I'm selling three of them myself - one with an adaptor, two without. The one with came with a 28-70mm Sigma lens and a not very nice Miranda 70-210mm. I'm keeping the Sigma for my own collection. The two others come with the very nice 50mm f2.8 lens. Anyway, private message me for details. ...

My Dads got one
Advantages: bomb proof, quality lenses, size Disadvantages: You may have to know basic photography to get the best out of it.
...available on e bay.The T20 Olympus flashgun also works a treat.
All the switches and dials work with a reassuring positiveness. The shutter and aperture settings are on the lenses themselves which always seemed like the best place for them to me.
It uses a centre weighted metering system which always seemed to cope well with most things that was thrown at it and only ever had to use the exposure compensation dial on the top of the camera rarely, ... ...a bit of a faf trying to get the film to engage on the spool when loading it I remember.
You had to make sure the 'slack' had been taken up on the rewind handle before using, otherwise could end up with a film full of nothing.
Nice very compact SLR. ...
