Designed to increase the functionality of your PC's USB port, SMC's EZ Hub USB delivers plug-and-play connectivity to multiple devices. The unit is "hot-swappable," so you can connect or disconnect devices without interrupting PC power. The unit derives bus power from its host's USB connector to drive low-power devices, and support high-power peripherals when powered by the hub's power adapter. They also support self-powered devices. To satisfy even the most demanding of PC users, the EZ Hub USB can be connected in series to up to four additional hubs and out to multiple USB devices that are placed up to 16.4 feet away. The hub provides automatic full- and low-speed signaling support, as well as suspend and resume control with remote wakeup for all of its downstream ports. Housed in an extremely compact package, the EZ Hub USB mounts on a wall as well as on or under a desktop in an upright or flat position with its EZ-mount bracket. The hub features eight LEDs for "at-a-glance" indication of individual port, power, and reset status and comes with a power adapter and standard 6.5 foot USB cable for easy connectivity to your PC.
Advantages: Funky glowing lights Disadvantages: Cheaper "clones" are available
...I bought the Targus Ultra Mini 4-Port USB Hub as I have more USB items than USB sockets on my laptop docking station.
Its compact dimensions (width 9.5 cm, depth 4 cm, height 1.5 cm, weight 40 g)and included USB connection cable allow it to fit anywhere on the desk, and its four USB 2.0 ports (480Mbps data transfer) allow rapid connection to all sorts of peripherals. It's also backward compatible with older USB 1.1 devices, and Apple devices I believe, too.
Installation (with Windows XP SP2) is a doddle, with no drivers aor anything to install, just plug it in, wait a few seconds while Windows does its stuff, and we're off. Connecting USB peripherals previously connected directly prompts Windows to repeat its "Found New Hardware" business, but this takes just a few seconds.
When peripherals are connected, the plastic around...

Advantages: Ebay bargain ! Disadvantages: Only 10 mbps, Only 4 ports
...Bought this on Ebay for a bargain £1 to expand my network. I've since replaced it with another 3Com hub (check out my other reviews), but thought I'd still let you know a little about it.
It's an entry-level, 4porthub, but only 10BASE-T, rather than the faster 100BASE-TX - that's why I upgraded, so you can connect 4 users together.
There's one (manually switched) MDI-MDIX port to provide simple "in" connection from a server, switch, or hub, and three other female RJ-45 ports to send the network signal out to 3 other items.
The hub has an external power supply and a "CoolCurve" self-cooling design eliminating the need for a noisy fan. Its dimensions (height: 3.6cm, width: 23.1cm, depth: 13.6cm) allow it to fit nicely with other 3Com OfficeConnect units - special stacking clips are available.
It's an "unmanaged" hub, so...

Bought this as an add-on for my Home PC, although very small and excellent for Notebooks, in fact its designed for notebooks and its comes in a very small form factor it connects with a USB A - USB B Mini the features are
Features 4ports
Provides data transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps

This Hub is your basic 4porthub connect up to four devices with USB and supporting high speed it gives great speeds for transferring files, although you do need to make sure the port you are connecting too is high speed to take advantage of that but works well with USB 1.1 too, it comes in a nice piano black sheen with clear indicated port points and is supplied with connection cable, its compatible with Windows up to Vista and also MacOS X 10.1 or later, to be honest...
