EA games are known for making some of the best sports games available... SSX Tricky is brought to us from 'EA Sports BIG' - the division that releases the extreme sports games, and this snowboard racing / showing off game certianly fits into that category.
SSX Tricky (SSX) is a snowboarding based game that can be played in 1 or 2 player mode. There are three basic game options that can be played - Time Challenge, Single Event or World Circuit.
Time Challenge: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In time challenge mode it's a race against the clock. You choose the slope from the selection available to you and away you go...
Single Event: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Single Events can be played by one or two players simultaneously. This can make for a lot of fun, especially if you've got a competitive streak in you. There are two types of event: 'Race' or 'Show Off'. A race is as it sounds - basically a race to the finish line. A total of 6 characters take part in the race, so even in 1 player mode you have some competition. The characters all have their own personalities - some will like you and let you get on with your own thing, others may not like you, in fact, some go as far as being your enemies and will try to push you over at any opportunity they get! Show-Off is your chance to get bashing those buttons to rack up some points. Using the same courses as in the races, your goal this time is to score as many points as possible through pulling off as many tricks as you can - the more extreme the better! However, it's not as easy as it sounds, as you still have to make it to the finish line within the time limit. In 1 player mode you have the slopes to yourself, however in 2 player mode you and your opponent race down the slopes together.
World Circuit: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ World Circuit is a competition mode that can only be played by a single player at a time. The courses and events are the same as with single events, but in each event you take part in you are striving to achieve a placing in order to pick up a medal. As you successfully complete races and show off events on each track you are able to unlock further tracks which can then be used in Single Event mode.
Other Features: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On starting the game only a selection of the characters are available for you to use to race and show-off with. Each of these characters only has a basic board and outfit for the slopes. Each character has a 'trick book' which is divided into chapters containing 5 tricks, each chapter containing more progressively difficult tricks. As you complete the tricks in each chapter different outfits become available to your character. Earning gold medals and being placed on the World Circuit unlocks new characters and new boards. You can also improve your characters attributes (e.g. Speed, Edging, Tricks and Stability) through successfully completing World Circuit events. The save feature available if you have a memory card for your PS2 allows you to save the improved attributes of your character and the boards / courses you have unlocked, which can then be used in the Single Events and Time Trials.
Controls ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On starting the game the controls can seem a little difficult and confusing. The game uses the analogue controllers (the little joystick type controls) and the directional buttons, as well as the cross and square buttons, R1, R2, L1 and L2. (Apologies to those unfamiliar with a PlayStation controller, but basically it means a lot of buttons are involved). The best advice to follow is not to try and be able to do everything at once - start of simple, just getting the feel of steering your character through the course before attempting to pull a few jumps and moving onto the Uber Tricks!
Final Scores ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SSX Tricky is an extremely playable and enjoyable game, even if you know nothing about snowboarding before you start (which I didn't). You'll soon find yourself becoming familiar with the terms used (for example fakie, mutation, indy, flying squirrel) and what they are referring to. It's probably not the sort of game younger children would pick up quite so quickly - the box recommends it for 11+ and I think I'd agree with that. It certainly becomes quite addictive and you can waste a good few hours playing on it at a time. The graphics are excellent, especially for such a fast paced game, and the accompanying soundtrack certainly fits well (unsuprisingly you'll hear Run DMC's It's Tricky a few times!) Priced at roughly £44.99 (though shop around as you can get it slightly cheaper) it's certainly worth the money as is the sort of game you'll go back to time and time again. SSX Tricky certainly deserves 5 out of 5.
Advantages: on £20 Platinum range, Sleek graphics, great sound, good variety of options, Above all else FUN to play Disadvantages: Occasionally getting stuck in the scenery frustrates, Not all tracks totally original
SSX was one of the launch titles at the Playstation 2's release and was given a very favourable reception. Unfortunately being a launch titles means meeting strict deadlines not to mention having to code for a completely new console. Inevitably corners get cut and features dropped. Developer EA went back to work on the game after it was released apparently intending to create more of a special edition of SSX rather than a fully-fledged sequel. After ... ...a winner. It was named SSX Tricky and the decision was made to release it at full price. I didn't get a PS2 until a couple of years after its launch so missed both these titles when first released. Fortunately SSX Tricky has recently joined SSX on the £20 platinum budget label and I bought it as one of those impulse purchases that my bank manager doesn't seem to understand the concept of. SSX Tricky is the follow up to one of the PS2's best launch ...

Advantages: Lots of gameplay as you try to master the game with each of 12 characters Disadvantages: You might get sick of doing the same thing over and over 12 times
The second in the SSX series from the BIG division of EA Sports , best known for its extreme sports themed games. I’ve decided in this review to answer the questions I usually have about games before buying them, mainly because I really enjoyed reviewing FFX-2 in this manner.
SNOWBOARDING? WHY WOULD I BE INTERESTED IN THAT THEN?
I never thought I’d have anything but a fleeting interest in this game when I first got my PS2 which came with a demo ... ...people have dubbed this game SSX 1 and a half, because of its similarity to the first one, but as the latest SSX game is called SSX3, I’m guessing the developers of the game see this as a sequel. WHY IS IT CALLED ‘TRICKY’ THEN?
I guess it is to draw attention to the fact that the “pulling tricks” aspect of the game has been beefed up. It’s probably also because eventually you can’t even think about the game without hearing ‘It’s Tricky’ by Run DMC ...

...you thought were bad on SSX have been modified and improved. Now you can compete in race mode trick mode time trials and all sorts. But the best improvement by far is the new edition of UBER tricks.
What happens with this UBER tricks is you trick your adrenaline bar up to full and the game starts playng some really funky music and the screen flashes. Then you have to perform a special modified trick called an UBER trick which gains you lots of points ... ...superb! it really is extremely good value for money as this game constantly entertains and leaves you wanting more all for uner £5!! it is a much better improvement on its predecessor "SSX" and really if you have a console that plays SSX tricky then buy it. Buy it now! ...

Advantages: Great when playing with a friend Disadvantages: it's not that tricky
Players: 1-2
Price: £40
SSX was a good game with slightly annoying bits but SSX Tricky is great. If only all sequels were this good. Everything that annoyed about the first game has been put right, and all the good things have been better. Hate Jurgen and Hiro? Consider them gone. Want more challenge? Take two new circuits and a revamped Show off mode. Want wilder stunts? Slap on some Uber tricks. This is better in every way.

SSX Tricky is kind of the same as the original. While Tricky’s better in every way, it can feel a little too comfy. If you’re only interested in racing, you’ll see everything in a weak. Die-hard trickster might find the Showoff mode too easy, though there are plenty of shortcuts and hidden bits to keep you busy for months. There’s huge cope to really show off. Still the best on PS2. Newcomers will love it, and ...

...ago and now we have SSX and SSX Tricky on the PS2 (my friend when she saw it said – ‘oooh, I thought it was called Tricky sex?’ – I assure you not that kind of game at all!). I haven’t played SSX; apparently it’s good, though while that concentrates more on the racing aspect – this one is all about the tricks! You will of course reverently place it into the disc drive and after the obligatory toe tapping ... ...with a cacophony of colour as the very loud and excitable intro commences. You’ll see the game characters performing a range of amazing (uber) tricks (more on these later) and funky dance moves to the beat of Run DMC, Tricky (the song not the man). Don’t pout about the tantalising nature of the intro – the game graphics are of equal (i.e. very good) quality and the cool tricks are possible within the game (though I wouldn’t ...

Advantages: outstanding realism in gfx and gameplay Disadvantages: quicky becomes boring
I bought this game after playing on the offical demo. What a mistake! My own fault - I should've realise by the number of pre-owned copies on sale. The demo is good and quite addictive but only because you can only play for about 3 minutes before it stops. It leaves you wanting more more more. The full game is ok if you like down jumps, grabs etc but quickly dulls as there's nothing else to do. I'd played SSXTricky to death on the PS2 and that was a big mistake! Where AMPED is far better graphically and in realism of stunts and boarding, SSX is far more playable and addictive. Don't underestimate to lure of being able to race - this is where AMPED is lacking. You do a run in your own time, accumulate points and unlock new mountains, none having the awe of SSX's totally OTT courses. Avoid at all costs. BLAND COURSES BLAND RIDERS ...
My friend got a demo of this with his PS2.
You can only play for 2 minutes 20 seconds, on one course, with one player.
Yet i'm addicted and we spend hours on it every night.
He got his PS2 in August, that really says something about the playability of the game with we are still playing on it now.
I can't comment on the games options and special features as the demo doesn't show them.
But if it can last 2 months going on 3 there must be something good about it.
I would recommend you buy this is you want a cheap addictive game.
But if like me you want the next stage up wait till SSX: Tricky comes out the next and more updated version.
I don't have a PS2, but it's on my Christmas list as is SSX: Tricky, make sure you do the same! ...

Advantages: Several over other PS2s, DVD playback a major bonus Disadvantages: Accessories are not cheap
games will defiantly work, but rest assured most will. There used to be a site of games with issues, but I can't find it anymore.
But you will probably find this irrelevant after a few months because the games out now are of a sufficiantly high quality. Nearly two years has given us GTA3, Gran Turismo 3A Spec, Jak and Daxter, Metal Gear Solid 2, and more games in the pipeline look just as stunning (The Getaway...).
Really, it's more of the same, but the graphics are so much better.
If you get a PS2, I would recommend renting a copy of SSX (SSXTricky of its cheap enough) and Smugglers Run - two games that show the possibilities of PS2. SSX for the adreneline rush, and Smugglers Run for the scope.
But I do think games are a bit pricey - up to £49.99... I get them off auction sites, though so check that out.
