Advantages: Small, good looking, U3 feature, fast enough for Vista Disadvantages: U3 features don't work with Vista (yet)
...in the Windows notification area (next to the clock) to tell the system you want to remove it.
Vista can also use USB sticks as temporary storage space to reduce wear & tear on your harddrive and to hopefully improve performance slightly. Setting this up is easy - Vista does all the prompting as soon as you insert the USB stick the first time and you can then allocate a chunk of the stick as your 'go faster stripes'. I can't say I really noticed much difference but reading around, it does seem to be very system dependent as to how much benefit you get. Worth a try, certainly.
Next I tried it with Windows XP which it supports along with Windows 2000 SP4. If you're on Windows 95/98/Me, it may be OK but don't expect support if it doesn't.
This was much better. As soon as the USB stick was inserted, the U3 software fired up and gave me access to all...

Advantages: 4 GB, U3, Compact Stick, Reasonably Fast Write Speed, Disadvantages: U3, There are faster sticks out there.
...installed on a harddrive ever again. You can have your entire life on your memory stick. Address books, e-mail, favourites, everything set up just the way you like it. Just don't lose the stick!
There are however alternatives to U3. and when it comes to U3 the fact of the matter is this: I hate it. To start with U3 only works on windows. And if you don't mind this or the occasional random system freeze this is a decent piece of software. U3 isn't the most straightforward portable application software out there either. If you want to run software off your memory stick then either try typing "portable apps" or "damnsmalllinux" into Google. Either of these options will give you a better option than the U3 system on

My current USB drive is old & slow and packs a humungous 128Mb so I figured it was time to upgrade. I decided to look at this Verbatim because the price premium was small over a no-name equivalent with the 2Gb version clocking in at just £14.99.

This hard drive is very similar in look and feel to the other Passport versions that Western Digital has, in particular the Book with a glowing yellow circle that is very nice to look at and quite heavy to boot.
