Advantages: Humane Disadvantages: Doesn't work and a waste of carrots
I bought a Pestbye rabbittrap from an online shop after a single rabbit moved into my garden, and decided to decimate it.
The trap wasn't too badly priced, less than £20 including postage, and arrived quite quickly. It didn't have any instructions with it on how to assemble it or how to use it, but the online shop e-mailed assembly instructions after I contacted them. However, no instructions on how to use it were provided, so being a novice rabbit trapper I had to search online for these.
The trap is a cage with a spring loaded door, which closes when bunny goes to eat the carrots placed as bait at the back of the cage, and in doing so treads on a metal plate which triggers the door closing system. This appealed to me as it seemed I could trap the rabbit and then take it on a brief car journey to release it to go about it ...
Advantages: EXQUISITE CREATURES. Disadvantages: TAKE A LOT OF LOOKING AFTER.
which are much more suited to be indoor animals, and larger varieties which are more suited to cages, or a garden environment. Lop eared rabbits are extremely attractive, and care of the rabbit should be taken into consideration when getting one. Who is going to groom it ? Who is going to be responsible for that rabbit ? All of these are important considerations, as a rabbit cannot stand up for itself and complain when it has a need, and the needs must be catered for by a responsible owner.
Chosing a Rabbit.
Many pet shops sell rabbits. When I bought mine, I looked through several pet shops, and in one I was completely horrified to find that a guinea pig lay dead in its cage, and that the owner of the shop was totally unaware of it. Advantages: Very friendly, each one is very individual Disadvantages: Involves a lot of time and money
territorial animals and will mark their territory. Spaying or neutering will also reduce your pets aggression and reduce the amount of time they spend chewing on things!
Whether or not you let your rabbit have free run of your house you should provide him/her with a cage, this will provide your pet with a place that's his and his alone!
One major problem that we had with all our rabbits was that they chewed and burrowed into everything!! (With rabbits and a cat you can imagine what our home looked like!) The only things I really found that helped with this was to give it a lot of attention and a lot of toys, that way your pet will chew on the toys and will feel contented enough not to want to burrow into or chew your furniture! It is however important that you cover or hide all electrical cables as your pet will chew these too!
