I don’t want Morrisons to get Safeway, as I basically do not like Morrisons, the way it is interiorly designed and laid out, it’s product quality and it’s general image is very dated. Even though I gave it 4 stars in my op, I have since changed my mind! Don’t get me wrong, it’s very popular, but just not my kind of shop.
Anyway, here is my opinion on the nearest Safeway store to us.
~The Store~
The store is located in St Helens, near Liverpool. Lets face it, if you live in St Helens I apologise, but the town centre is a grim place. Im not sure about the rest of St Helens but it definitely is in the town centre, where this Safeway is located.
Driving in to the store there is a barrier where you used to have to take a card for the cashier in store to stamp, to prove that you have parked in the car park to shop and not to just go in to the town centre to do some shopping. But over the last year this has been an on-off operation and most of the time they just leave the barrier up as they need all the customers they can get due to local competition.
The store from the outside is very old fashioned with some dated glass pyramid design above the entrance. Outside in the car park a lot of litter is blowing around especially outside the cash machines.
There are plenty of trollies parked outside, and you do not need a £1 coin for these which is good as in Sainsburys Morrisons and Asda you do need one. And who ever has one??
It is quite a big store. As big as an Asda store I think but a lot better in terms of space and lay-out.
~The layout~
This is better in this Safeway than in other stores I know such as Morrisons and Tesco. As with most stores you are greeted on entering with the Customer service desk, and the Cigarette and National Lottery counter.
After that is the fresh produce, and after they did away with the weigh-and-print-a-sticker-scales, the department is a lot easier to shop in.
At the rear of the store after the fruit and veg are the best fresh food counters I have seen in any store. There is a hot chicken counter, which, admittedly looks very juicy and temting, even though I hate chicken. Then there is the Deli which sells some very appetizing food, along with the pizza counter which sells pizzas loaded with toppings which have been made in the store.
The meat and fish counters are also very good, and extremely popular.
The first few aisles offer ready meals, meat fish and dairy products such as milk yoghurts and cheese. I suppose I would prefer these aisles to be at the end of the store as they may warm up by the time you have finished shopping. But then again, the bread aisle in the Tesco I work in is at the beginning of the store, so It can get crushed to bits by all the heavier stuff.
The middle of the store is concentrated on bread and cakes, and the bakery is located on the back wall.
The cleaning stuff and grocery products like beans and health and beauty is at the front.
At the end of the store is the homewares department. They also sell St. Helens rugby shirts here too.
At the front, Safeway have done away with the creche, and added a brand new home entertainment department which I love. More about products and prices later in the op!
~Cleanliness~
Lets face it, unless it has been re-fitted, a Safeway store will always be grubby. The floors are usually covered in black marks where people have stood on grapes and left dirt on the floor off their shoes etc. However, the Café is very clean, you might as well say spotless. Same goes for the toilets too. I have never seen a cleaner pushing a mop and bucket around the shop floor though, like you do in other stores.Im not saying the shop should be shut down, just it needs a bit of a spring clean.
I have been in other, newer Safeway store while on my travels around the country, and these seem to be spotlessly clean.
~Ranges~
Savers
Savers is Safeways brand of goods for the budget conscious. It is similar to the Value and Economy ranges at Tesco’s and Sainsbury. Its products are dressed in a grim dark green and red, this may be a bit gordy, but it makes the products to spot on the shelves. Prices are usually, or just above, half the price of the Safeway standard own brand equivalent. So far, I have been surprisingly impressed with products I have bought from this range, like Orange juice and white bread.
The Best
This is a range of deliciously tasting, but not so deliciously priced, food items. It is meant to be their extra special brand. The prices are considerably higher than the Safeway standard brand, but it is definitely worth every penny in taste. Its similar to Tesco Finest* and Sainsbury Taste the Difference.
The range covers fod only, including pizza, ready meals, meats, cooked meats, dairy products like yoghurts, cheese and a small range of frozen desserts.
Products I have had from the The Best range are yoghurts, Ice cream, ham and chocolate. I have absolutely devoured the lot with no problems and would definitely recommend you buy the odd item from this range. You have to reward yourself sometimes! The best is silver and black coloured on the label, so its easily identified. Very posh!
Eat smart
These include sandwiches, ready meals, yoghurts, frozen foods and other food items and is Safeway’s Healthy Eating.
I cannot comment on any of these apart from the sandwiches which, actually were quite nice.
~What else, apart from food, do they sell?~
Safeway sell items for the home such as kitchen utensils, towels and other bathroom items, home furnishings. Also, as mentioned they sell shirts for the local rugby team..
At the front where the creche used to be is a home entertainment store where they sell cd’s, dvd’s, and videos, as well as TV’s VCR’s and Hi Fi’s all at incredibly low prices. My sister bought a Hi Fi from Comet for £129 and then saw it in Safeway the month after for £79. She was gob smacked!
~Offers~
Safeway have some amazing offers, and as I gather, they have made themselves somewhat famous for them. But you have do get there quick or they will run out quite fast! A few months ago, I saw King Size bed covers for just £6.99, yes, £699! Lol.
Kitchen rolls are another favourite as well as bleach, I regularly see these on offer. You may want to check out the health and beauty section of the store too as they have bogof’s on things like expensive shampoos and conditioners quite often.
There are a lot more offers on at Safeway than Asda or Tesco.
~Availability~
Unless its on a product on offer, availability here is great compared with other places. I can regularly get everything on my list. If it was a bad day though, you might get 18 0r 19 out of a list of 20, but then again, that’s not bad.
There may be gaps on the shelves, but if you ask, they normally have it hiding in the back somewhere.
~Staff~
Staff are generally helpful. I expect them to be as working in a store myself, you are pressurised in to giving good customer service in order to not get in to trouble and keep in the good books of your section manager! There are plenty of staff about in Safeway and are recognisable in their bright green and red uniforms.
Checkout operators are cheery and chatty, and apart from the odd one, they are happy to help with packing and so on.
~Prices~
Safeways prices may actually be slightly highet than the likes of Sainsbury’s and Tesco, but I believe that this is reflected in their quality of food, other products and services. What you save on the money side, you loose in the value for money side.
And anyway, Safeway operate what is called a high-low pricing strategy. The prices are generally slightly higher than others, but you save on things you would normally buy, that are heavily slashed in price, usually below ½.
Other stores put on offers on products you wouldn’t normally consider buying, therefore it is not a bargain!
~Overall~
Safeway really are, as they say, ‘The friendliest store in town’, availability of stock is excellent, the shops are airy and wide-aisled, and the staff friendly. What more do you want from a supermarket? You want it to clean your house I hear you say?

Advantages: Ooh, the bargains to be had Disadvantages: Looking a bit dated, 'pooey' salad
...amount of time in the Safeway in Fishponds in Bristol. However my service user is now at the point where she can go around the supermarket on her own and I can go and sit in the café, thus observing Safeway in its entirety.
Lord alone knows what the staff think as this big 5’ 8”, bright red haired pierced woman trailed around this little old lady! At any moment I expected the security to come and clap me on the shoulder, accusing me of getting ready ... ...these open salad bars, and Safeway has a great one which includes a wide range of olives. Its just that people like to dip their fingers and taste the produce, as the toilets are by the entrance to the store I don’t know where they’ve been! Some covers would be appreciated!
As for the lazy buggers who cant be bothered to cook is a curry ‘bar’, freshly made pizza (not on site), and again the rotisserie which seems to be springing up in all stores. ...

Advantages: ooh! the banter... Disadvantages: will soon be transformed into an English 'market street'
If an alien landed on our soil, what would he make of our shopping habits? After noting our tendency to build huge, bland, monolithic churches to consumerism on every spare bit of land and then rush frantically to park as near to the doors as possible – would he be further surprised to hear us debate for hours the virtue of one store over another?
I’ll bet that little green chap wouldn’t believe his pointy ears listening to the ... ...streets across the land. Asda rocks! Sainsburys is too expensive! You can never get parked at Tescos!
Surely to god, he would muse, as he sauntered back to his saucer, these places are all more or less the same? Stack it high, sell it cheap – put sweeties at the checkout and a cheesy ‘celeb’ in your advertising campaign and bingo, you are a British supermarket. But no. We are *soooo* much more sophisticated than that. We are discerning, ...

Advantages: Locality Disadvantages: Expensive and limited range
...an Asda fan, but as Safeway have a store right next to my house, I find myself in there a couple of times a week picking up the odd item, and to be honest, I can only afford to pick up the odd item, because excluding their weekly special deals (which I will come to later), Safeway are very very expensive, and the variety of products on offer from the likes of Asda and Tesco just cannot be rivalled by Safeway. Most other stores have a list of a trolley ... ...their rivals. Safeway would not dare do this, as they would have to tell some huge lies to make it look good. Each Wednesday, the new special offers go on display, and all of the surrounding houses are given leaflets outlining the offers, and the leaflet states that each offer is limited to 3 per person (although there is no limit to the time that you can return and buy your three items), and they are available from Wednesday - Tuesday. Sounds good? ...

Advantages: Good offers on products you actually want Disadvantages: poor car park layout
Safeway supermarkets seem to be trying to brighten up their image and project themselves back onto the stage as serious players in the supermarket game. Once the bastion of all that was bad with cheap and cheerful inner-city supermarkets now Safeway is presenting a more upmarket image.
I have a Safeway store close to where I work (Barbican) and a new store has opened up where I live in Woking.
Safeway's have ditched their loyalty card scheme (that ... ...a little of everything. Safeway have developed a system whereby if a product has truly run out they will add a dot to the bar code on the shelf, thus, if a product is not on display and there is no dot on the barcode, chances are they will have some "out the back" and a member of staff will be more than happy to get it for you.
The Woking store filled an immediate need in the community. Whilst there is a branch of Sainsbury's in the town centre ...

Advantages: lots of bargains Disadvantages: ihave to travel agood hour to get to the nearest one
I’ve always like shopping at Safeway ever since I first stepped through their doors. In the beginning it was the lovely large clean and bright store that I fell in love with, together with the fact that I was so impressed with the range of food that they sell, there was so much choice in there. I also liked the ABC loyalty card but they’ve done away with that now so no point in going into to that.
Before they popped up in my hometown the largest ... ...they had real competitors in Safeway because it was so big and the offers were and are brilliant.
I used a few of Safeway’s stores, Hawick, Kelso, Llandudno and currently use one of the Inverness branches, occasionally popping over to the Ullapool store if we happen to be there.
I must admit that I’ve thought about trying out Tesco again, I haven’t been there for a long time, but they don’t have the offer of 5p off per litre (up to 100 litres) ...

Then we move around to cake shop, this is where they make all of the delicious yummy trats that i'm not allowed, danish pastry, egg custard, flapjack, cookies, mousse, im getting hungry just thinking about it, lets move on quickly. Onto the Butchery department, on here they sell the main meats, chicken, turkey, lamb, pork and beef, you can buy a joint, a steak, a chop, diced virtually however you want it, they also sell weird stuff such as diced pigs liver and a variety of other things which im sure only people over a certain age like. Like the fish bar you can clearly see the butchers working, which is a refreshing sight, making sure they're not kicking it around the floor ...

Asda is (for anyone not sure!) one of the biggest, if not THE biggest supermarket chain in the UK. I have shopped with Asda for well over 5 years now, after getting fed up with Safeway/Morrisons.
There are two main reasons I like to shop at Asda; firstly, they have what I feel is the best selection of products of any of the big supermarkets. Everything from oranges to flat screen tvs. The second reason is simple, in my opinion they are by far the cheapest supermarket without losing quality. Don't get me wrong, I know there are cheaper places, like ALDI or Lidl, but the quality really is less in these stores.
When all is said and done, I really believe that for quality, value and choice... Asda is the one. ...

Advantages: The cheapest supermarket in the area Disadvantages: Can be very busy, especially at week-ends
I always choose to do my 'weekly' shop at Morrisons. Compared to the other local shops, Tesco, Safeways and Sainsbury it is definately the cheapest for every day items, that we all need. Their offers are great, especially the buy-one-get-one-free. Often I can double the quantity for half the price, these offers are changed regularly, and are not just their own products but well known brands. There is also a large range of fresh fish, baked on site pies and bread and not forgetting their great range of cakes all of which are made in the shop.
The staff are always helpful, and easy to find.
The only problem with such quality for money is that the store can be quite busy, especially at week-ends and before public holidays. ...
