Advantages Advantages A good value vegetable based alternative to margarine

Disadvantages Disadvantages It's still not butter

A visit to the doctors to have the results of some tests I’d had done, started the title of this opinion. I had become, for some reason unbeknown to me, allergic to dairy products. At first I was absolutely devastated - what was I going to eat? I am always eating bread (sandwiches, toast, rolls etc.), baked potatoes, and light cakes and I do quite a lot of baking, and so I rely on butter and margarine. I hunted high and low. Scouring the supermarkets left, right and centre. I found that there was more alternatives on the market than I expected, so I felt a bit spoilt for choice, but I ... more

Advantages Advantages Now lower in Fat and Calories

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None for me

Now repackaged and changed it is called Sainsburys Freefrom dairy free, low fat vegetable spread. A great opinion from roberts8 on this spread, which I agree with completely. I wanted to add my opinion though to this spread, as over the past couple of months it has changed, and for the better I might add! I too had done ‘The great Margarine hunt’ and had settled with the Sainsbury’s Dairy free spread, but then I couldn’t get any for a while, even trying different area’s for it (well when that’s all you can have, you can end up doing just about anything to ... more

Usual yellow "Freefrom" packaging. There are also dairy-free spreads in health food stores and vegetarian shops. It's available again! Advantages Advantages was very good

Disadvantages Disadvantages now no longer available

That after many years of using Sainsburys dairy free spread they are now not stocking it any longer. Does anyone know one they would reconmend. Just as a note "Pure spread is not to bad but no good at all for baking cakes and pastry. This item is from the Freefrom range and the staff at my local store have been unable to find out why it has been withdrawn. All the time I have used this product, all my cooking has been a success, now I am unable to make the cakes and pastries my family love. We are being penalised. Why did sainsburys stop selling this product when it is very obviously a ... more

Advantages Advantages Great for allergy sufferers and Vegans

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not as nice as butter

Sadly for me, I'm extremely allergic to both wheat and dairy and can't even 'cheat' without getting very ill, which makes it rather pointless as that sort of cheating is about pleasure gratification, and that is certainly not the end result for me! But Sainsbury's dairy free spread is the most reasonable product I have found to spread on my free from bread. It's ok on potatoes and vegetables too, and does just fine as a replacement in baking along with rice flour or soya milk. It doesn't taste like butter, but it does the job, and does it better than other non dairy products on the market ... more
