Houmous….. Well where do I start. Houmous as far as I am aware originates from the Middle East and has started to become a very popular food item in Europe. I have always been a fan of houmous and have eaten it for many years and have tried many different varieties. Its core ingredient is chickpeas which I absolutely love and to make houmous they are all mashed up to form a puree with oils being added and sometimes a few spices. Be aware that there are also many ways of spelling its name eg Humus, Hummus and Homus to name just a few. The product I am going to review today is Sainsbury’s Fresh ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite high in calories

Feeling in the mood for some savoury nibbles with our barbecue. I bought a pot of Sainsbuy's Pesto Style Houmous to eat with breadsticks and vegetable crudites. I love houmous but tend to shy away from it because, unless I make my own low fat recipe, it is high in calories due to the oil content. But I was attracted to this new type of houmous with the addition of another favourite of mine, pesto, in it and wasn't in the mood for blitzing chickpeas!!. The tub contained 200g of houmous and came with a replaceable plastic lid. It was contained within a colourful cardboard sleeve that shows a ... more

Though nothing beats freshly made houmous, Sainsbury's attempt comes very close. Houmous is a delicious dip/spread that originates from the middle east. It is primarily made with crushed cooked chick peas, which are then mixed with olive oil, tahini (sesame paste), lemon juice, salt and garlic. It can be enjoyed by vegetarians, and provides a good source of nutrition. Uses: Houmous is a great party dip, which nearly everyone will enjoy. I manage to spread Houmous on nearly anything. It is a lovely when served with pita bread, or bread sticks, crackers, rice cakes, and I do quite enjoy it with ... more

A few days ago we just entered to Sainsbury’s to get something for dinner. We had no idea what to eat. As I was baking all day for my friend’s party I had no intention cooking or baking anything for dinner. We took a look at the fresh ready made food available that evening. My hubby wanted to eat houmous. It was on offer, so we bought two pots (200 g each). One of them was Moroccan style, the other one was Roasted Red Pepper Houmous. Moroccan style Houmous ------------------------------------- Its taste reminds me to Indian food. It is very delicious, lovely taste. It is quite hot. We bought ... more

Advantages Advantages It tastes great and is good value for money.

Disadvantages Disadvantages A couple of other brands are slightly cheaper.

I have sampled houmous from most main supermarkets and would recommmend this one out of all of them. In my opinion the balance of flavours is just right, compared to other own brands which taste a little bland. I have sometimes been put off foods because of the smell, but this product ticks all the boxes. It is also fantastic value for money at just over £1 and there are a variety of different styles, e.g morrocan/chunky. However, from my point of view the original is always the best. It is great for using as a dip at parties with some veg/crisps and although it is incredibly moreish, the face ... more
