Let me explain. THE PACKAGING These Sainsbury’s Lamb Shanks (with a seasoning mix for rich Rosemary Gravy) were from the fresh produce counter and are packs of two. They are packaged in a large clear plastic tub with a removable cardboard label on the outside. Information gained from the packaging tells me that it is BRITISH MEAT and FARM ASSURED (not that that gives me any great comfort - it does not mean that it is organic or necessarily that it was a happy lamb)
THE COST Just £2.99 per pack of 2
THE CONTENTS Having taken off the cardboard label and slipped a sharp knife around the top of the carton, I was met with a fairly large sachet of powdered gravy mix and 2 small lamb shanks. By small I mean they were 7” from bone end to end, with most of the meat being at one end. As both my husband and I have healthy appetites I decided that we would want two each, so luckily I had bought two packs!
THE COOKING Conventional Oven 2 hours 20 minutes. The problem I was faced with is that my oven decided to give up the ghost on me and just would not start! So, my only choice was the slow cooker. As it was midday already, I turned it onto high in the hope that all would be sufficiently cooked by 6pm when we usually eat our evening meal. I placed all 4 lamb shanks in the slow cooker, mixed both sachets of powder with a little less than the required amount of boiling water, and poured over the meat, put the lid on and got back to Ciao!
By 4pm the smell of cooking lamb was so seductive and I was tempted to take a peek, but have learnt with slow cooking that that can spell the death of a dish - so left it until 6pm when all the veggies were steamed and ready to serve.
THE BEST PART - THE EATING Well, dishing up was a doddle! Having warmed the plates, I served two lamb shanks each for hubby and myself and you could see that the meat was beautifully tender and ready to fall of the bone. The gravy was beautifully thick and looked lovely, with flecks of rosemary in it and a lovely deep rich brown colour. I served with a variety of veg and was tempted to take a photo as it looked good enough to be a picture you might see in a cooking magazine - almost too good to eat. Almost!!! Oh, and we weren’t disappointed. The lamb was beautifully tender and there was plenty of it. Hubby did indeed manage both, but I struggled to be honest. I had expected them to shrink somewhat during cooking, but they seem to have plumped out. There was no gristle, no fat, just lovely, succulent lamb which fell clean off the bone.
THE VERDICT Mmmm, absolutely delicious. Not suitable for vegetarians!!!
