Hi there, I'm a student studying a degree in Zoology. My reviews tend to be based on whatever I... more

I needed a mattress protector for uni as I didn't trust the beds in halls and after searching around for the cheapest option came across this one in Sainsbury's for just £6 for a single. They come in 3 sizes; single (90x190cm), double (135x190cm) or kingsize (150x200cm).

When I brought the protector it was tightly folded into a clear plastic container. As I pulled it out it expanded a bit so it is slightly larger than it originally appears. The protector is available only in a plain white colour. Due to the low price this is a very basic item as you would expect and lacks certain features found in more expensive protectors. For example it is not waterproof which is a major drawback if you want it for use with a small child but fine if, like me, you just want a clean surface between yourself and a questionable mattress. It also lacks anti-microbial properties so there's no barrier against dust mites unfortunately.

The protector is fitted but fits loosely around the edges of the mattress although it is worth noting that university mattresses are often smaller than standard ones so it may be a better fit on a regular mattress. As the corners weren't tight around the edges of the mattress it does get a bit crumpled by the morning and has sometimes come loose. Personally I found that it didn't add much to comfort and I could still feel the mattress through the thinness of the protector.

The protector is quilted and padded and the material is fabric (35% cotton on the covering and 65% polyester for the inside filling) which is more comfortable and good for allergy sufferers. I have found that it has done a reasonably good job at keeping the mattress clean. However it has quite a poor capacity to withstand wear and tear. The sides are very thin and delicate and I have managed to put my finger through the fabric twice now.

Washing is straightforward and can be machine washed at 40°C or hand washed if you prefer. It is also suitable to tumble dry which is great for university were the alternative would be to drape t over the radiator (not a good idea for such a large item).

Overall this not a quality product but it does do a very good job at protecting the mattress given the price. It brings little to comfort despite the quilting but it has lasted me quite a while and I am rather pleased with it.
