When I say I, I meant my mother and myself. Her mission being to purchase the plonk and me to pay for, sample and write about it. The it in question being Sainsbury’s Spanish Sweet White Wine.

The wine is “a blend of traditional Spanish grape varieties in the La Mancha region, which lies to the south of Madrid” (straight from the label). There is even a tiny map on the label where you can see Spain and a little dot, which I can only assume is the La Mancha region.
The taste was quite a surprise as I have usually found Spanish wine to have a dry quality, which increases in proportion to the strength of the wine. I may have been unlucky or it maybe that my taste buds have regained a little life after stopping smoking (again). It is a rather fruity, very smooth and extremely pleasant little wine. If I were to pick fault I think the only one that I could find would be that it is very more-ish.
Therefore, this wine is definitely one to leave the car at home for. One glass would leave you in danger of being over the limit and I am an advocate of the zero tolerance brigade when it comes to drink driving. This is not due to being a spoilsport or believing that people do not know their own limits, it is to take the guesswork out of the argument. Enough from the soapbox. This sensitive subject deserves debate elsewhere.
I do not profess to be a wine expert, in fact I detest wine snobbery; why not have red wine with fish? If you like it and it’s in the privacy of your own house with consenting adults, who does it hurt? What was I talking about?
Yes, this is (in my humble opinion) a delightful little wine at an extremely reasonable price that should compliment the food at any dinner party, or just use it to swill down the take-away while you slob in front of the video.

What’s it like?
Sainsbury's Spanish Sweet White is just as it says, sweet and they rate it 7 on their chart, which I agree with but personally I find it a little too sweet for my tastes. The alcohol content is stated as 10% which these days is not strong with full bodied ball busters coming out at 14-15% which means you can drink this wine, well maybe a bottle easily, without falling over too many times. This is a blend of Spanish grapes ... ...of the La Mancha region. The wine is a rich sweet honeyed flavour and has quite a pleasant taste, no sharpness here.
I would drink this wine, maybe serve to outdoor guests in summer, but its not one for dinner parties where you are out to impress. This is not one to keep in your cellar for long indeed Sainsbury’s recommended the wine is consumed within 6 months of purchase. Spanish white wines are considered especially good with fish dishes, ...

I couldn’t make it to Sainsbury’s for my usual tipple, so I asked my sister if she would get me a bottle of SpanishSweetWhite Wine from our local Asda. The chap at the wines and spirits counter recommended Asda’s own ‘Moscatel De Valencia Denominacion De Origen’ at £3.27 for a 75cl bottle. The man deserves a bonus!
It is described on the label as “A distinctively smooth and lusciously honeyed sweetwhite wine with a very attractive full fruit character.” Not half, as Alan Freeman (Fluff to us oldies) used to say.
The wine comes in a clear white bottle with a screw cap. This may come in handy as you may not want to drink the full bottle at one sitting; it is 15% ABV (alcohol by volume) and is 1.9 units of alcohol for a standard 125ml glass.
Taste wise this has to be the sweetest ...
