Contrary to popular belief, I do not just chuck as much beer (in as short a period) as possible down my throat. Well, not every night!

I do like a change from the usual on a regular-ish basis. It was with this in mind, and the vague prospect of an opinion resulting from the experience, that I set out on an expedition into the unknown … Supermarket’s own brand wines.

When I say I, I meant my mother and myself. Her mission being to purchase the plonk and me to pay for, sample and write about it. The it in question being Sainsbury’s Spanish Sweet White Wine.

This product weighs in at £2.99 for a 75cl bottle, which according to the label serve six glasses at an alcohol content of 10% by volume (1.3 alcohol units per 125ml glass), and you can instantly tell that this wine is no lightweight.

The wine is “a blend of traditional Spanish grape varieties in the La Mancha region, which lies to the south of Madrid” (straight from the label). There is even a tiny map on the label where you can see Spain and a little dot, which I can only assume is the La Mancha region.

The taste was quite a surprise as I have usually found Spanish wine to have a dry quality, which increases in proportion to the strength of the wine. I may have been unlucky or it maybe that my taste buds have regained a little life after stopping smoking (again). It is a rather fruity, very smooth and extremely pleasant little wine. If I were to pick fault I think the only one that I could find would be that it is very more-ish.

Therefore, this wine is definitely one to leave the car at home for. One glass would leave you in danger of being over the limit and I am an advocate of the zero tolerance brigade when it comes to drink driving. This is not due to being a spoilsport or believing that people do not know their own limits, it is to take the guesswork out of the argument. Enough from the soapbox. This sensitive subject deserves debate elsewhere.

I do not profess to be a wine expert, in fact I detest wine snobbery; why not have red wine with fish? If you like it and it’s in the privacy of your own house with consenting adults, who does it hurt? What was I talking about?

Yes, this is (in my humble opinion) a delightful little wine at an extremely reasonable price that should compliment the food at any dinner party, or just use it to swill down the take-away while you slob in front of the video.

Hi! As I see, most Spanish wine people from UK drink is from La Mancha!! oops! Can´t believe it!!!! I don ´t have a deep knowdlege in wines but... As a Spanish girl... wouldn´t drink it :P Try a good white wine from Penedés (area near Barcelona) They are delicious!!!! If you are rich... Alvariño (white wine from Galicia...) Love from Spain.
