Advantages Clumps well to eliminate odour, pleasant smell, good value
Disadvantages Can leave marks on carpets
I have two cats, and even though they are different ages and not from the same litter, neither of them has ever been very much inclined to use a litter tray. They both prefer to go outside, and very rarely use the tray. Even so, I do not let either of them out at night, so always have a litter tray available should either of them need to use it.
Over the years I have tried various cat litter products, and it was about eighteen months ago that I purchased the Sainsbury's Ultra Clumping product. It is available in a no-frills paper-based bag, which it strong and durable enough to contain the heavy product inside. The bag also has a handle, so is easy to transport from the supermarket and when you get home. The texture of the litter is less coarse than some others I have used, and is almost sandy in appearance. It has an almost powdery smell, which is not unpleasant, but has a distinctly chemical whiff beneath the initial inoffensive fragrance. The smell of the litter is important when it comes to the tray having been used by your cat, as as well as the litter sealing around the waste in the tray, it also goes some way to masking the smell.I use a long plastic tray for my cats, and fill it about halfway full of the litter. I also place some sheets of newspapers beneath the tray, as when cats cover their waste and sniff around it they very often have a tendency to flick the litter out of the tray itself. I find that my cats do not propel the litter very far away from the tray (it helps that the product it so fine in texture), but it is essential for me to have some extra catchment area around the tray. I would also recommend placing the tray in an uncarpeted room, as if the litter does stray from the tray it can get into the carpet. My cats' litter tray is in the toilet area, which is tiled. However, some of the litter has got into the carpet before, and it is easy to remove with the suction apparatus on a hoover if it is found soon. Unfortunately several grains managed to get into the cream coloured carpet in the living room, and although I sucked them up with the hoover they did leave a few speckles of grey.
The bag of Ultra Clumping Litter retails at just under £4.00, and when I purchased the bag it lasted around ten months, as I need to use it so infrequently. However, if you have an indoor cat it will probably last up to a month, which still makes it very good value. The litter does clump very well, and thus helps to eliminate the odour of cat waste and leave the litter area cleaner and more pleasant-smelling. It is not the best litter I have ever used however, although I would certainly purchase it again if my other preferred litter products were not available.

Two of my cats both girls come in to use a tray and then go back out, they obviously don't like getting their feet dirty
