It was that time again when I needed to have my roots touched up as I get my hair professionally coloured. I am always looking around to try and get it done cheaper but I have come to the realisation that the best way to get the colour matched up is too pay the full price, as trainees have just ruined my hair in the past like giving me blonde highlights when I wanted my hair light brown, I had to resolve it myself as I am not the palest ever so blonde has never been an option before. I usually get my hair done when I go home to Scotland but down in England I wasn't too familiar with all of the salons so when my friend got some good discount vouchers for Saks I decided to go there as they have a good reputation.
Saks is known as the UK's leading hair salon with them having won many awards in hairdressing.
Saks also have hairdressing academies where they are training up many stylists. I know I had heard of them through their name being mentioned a lot in magazine and TV shows so this is what persuaded me to go to them, although I have never really lived near one of their salons before.
So, when I walked up to the salon it was smaller than I'd thought but it was really nice. The reception was kept separate from the actual styling room, they offered me a drink took my coat and then introduced me to my hairdresser. I was then taken through to the main salon where I was seated and given my drink and went through a consultation with my hairdresser. He looked at my hair knew right away I'd had highlights but I told him I wanted to even it all out and so he recommended right away which he thought best for me and confirmed it for me with the colour book. He also got his colleague's opinion to double check it and told me everything that would be done to make me feel at ease as I am always nervous when getting my roots done in case they are not matched up as I tend to always be at a different salon.
The salon was pretty much like most salons I have been to; they have their sinks on one end, chairs with mirror on the other and then styling products on shelves for all to see.
The staff in here were friendly enough but I can't say they were the friendliest staff I have come across. The receptionist seemed nice but was a bit snappy and didn't have that approachable quality that a receptionist should have. Also their assistant that does the hair washing and cleaning up was again not very friendly, she seemed very stand offish and her hair wasn't great itself considering she was working for a hairdresser. However, my actual hairdresser was very nice and friendly and was very smiley, he seemed to love his job and I couldn't say a bad word about him. The other stylist there wasn't that nice; he did my friends hair and was quite rude to her about her hair which is not what we pay for at the end of the day.
In Saks, the prices are like most salons but are quite pricey. The hair cuts start at £31 and finish at £45 as there is no lower option than a stylist. The blow dry is what annoyed me having to pay so much for it is £18 at the lowest and £23 at the most. The colour is £38 for a re-growth tint and half highlights are £58 and full highlights are £70. They also offer hair extensions, hair and scalp treatments and more colour options. I had a discount book to get £20 off colour and 50% off a cut and finish but these cannot be used at the same time unfortunately.
I felt the actual service was good, I got what I paid for they were not annoying staff and my hair colour was done quickly. I had to wait 30 minutes and then they washed my hair thoroughly and as I got it blow dried I saw the colour had matched perfectly although in a way I think it was luck as he was even shocked it had matched and seemed relieved as he had originally wanted to go for the lighter shade, so I was very thankful. The blow dry was ok but his next client came in early and I felt by this point he was rushing my hair and he curled it under when blow drying which I hated and I had to ask him for the hair straighteners to be used which was a bit annoying and even that was rushed.
Saks don't just do hair they also do beauty treatments like waxing, massages, nails and so on. I don't know if I would go back to this salon though, mine was the Warrington one at David Lloyd, they did the colour well but as for not having the vouchers and paying full price for the service I don't feel I got the attention I paid for. I have been to other salons in Scotland where I have paid full price for and they have spent a lot of time with finishing my hair off perfectly.
If you want to try out Saks then go to their website http://www.saks.co.uk and find your nearest salon.
