"No Jesus parting the Red Sea!"

Ok, so i hate to admit it but ive been a nailbiter for many years and i keep growing them on and off, but when im in the mood to grow them i love finding all the little treatments and nail varnishes to get them looking really good asap!

Looking for something to grow them a little bit faster, i came across Sally Hansen Nail Growth Miracle whilst shopping in Boots (my fave shop!) Obviously, i didnt pay too much attention to the 'Miracle' aspect of it but i thought it must be somewhat effective to make the claim.

The nail care aisle is pretty overwhelming, 50 products all claiming to do the same thing. But the price of it also made it stand out as it was £8.95 (13ml bottle) compared to the others of around £4 - £6. Again, it makes you think they obviously think its worth more than the rest. The gold bottle also makes it look that litle bit more expensive and special.

The official line on the pack is "30% longer nail tips in 5 days guaranteed". I was sceptical about this, as anyone would be, but im still of the naive thought that surely they cant make these claims if theyre not true hehe :)

Primarily aimed at soft, bitten, thin or damaged nails that just won't grow. It boasts Soy protein which binds moisture to nails, Keratin to help protect nails against splitting, cracking and tearing, and Collagen and multi-vitamins to stimulate healthy nail growth for visibly longer, beautiful nails in 5 days.

According to the Sally Hansen website, it was a winner of Best Inexpensive Nail Treatment for Problem Nails in the In Style 125 Best Beauty Buys, and more recently, a winner in the 'Best for Hands and Nails' category of 2007 She Beauty Awards.

Anyway, so it got it home and opened the bottle and the first thing i noticed was the strong smell, stronger than nail varnish. The consistency is really quite thin which i guess helps with drying time and absorption into the nail. The directions say to apply one coat to clean, dry, bare nails on day one, then paint another layer on day three and day five. It also says to not get it on cuticles or ur skin which is slightly worrying!

To cut to the chase, in my personal experience there was no significant difference within the 5 days and shortly thereafter I stopped using it as i thought it was no different to the rest of them.

It does say in the fine print that the difference is seen in nails with a free edge. But im not sure how accurate this is, as i dont know the difference between the growth in short nails and those with a free edge. I would imagine that those with a free edge are already growing quite well and therefore the product may just be relying on this. I also dont know how anyone is supposed to know what 30% of nail growth is in order to challenge the guarantee!

Ive started using OPI Nail Envy which i love, and when i dont use it the difference in my nails is significant. But that is like £15-£16. So maybe Nail Growth Miracle does work long term and that is why it has won the Best Inexpensive Treatment Award. It hasnt made such an impact that i felt compelled to keep using it.

I dont like the idea that something in it is that potent that they recommend you dont get it on your cuticles, sounds like it could be detrimental long term, but the list of ingredients such as the proteins might make it beneficial on a long term basis. Im not sure whether it would be suitable for brittle nails as the proteins may make them even more brittle and break off and it does mention one of the nails types being soft nails.

But the promise to "turn short stubby tips into beautifully long nails" didnt work in my case. I think that you're nail growth is predetermined and you wont change that, maybe just concentrate on products than treat your specific conditions like peeling once they get to the desired length naturally.
