I have been using some fairly average mechanical scales for a fair few months now and when I spotted these Salter scales reduced from £20.00 down to £10.00 in my local Sainsburys I decided it was too good an opportunity to pass up and I promptly snapped them up!
The scales come wrapped in plastic wrapping with the instructions/guarantee details inside and then there was polystyrene protecting the four corners of the glass to avoid breakages. The whole thing was then packed tightly in a cardboard box. The packaging was more than adequate to protect these scales from any breakages on the way home from the supermarket and was not too difficult to remove by myself in a minute or two.
Once the scales are unpacked they need to have a plastic tab removed from the back. This tab is underneath the battery and you need to remove the cover for the battery cover and then just pull the tab to remove the plastic. Unfortunately when I tried to remove the tab the tab pull part just snapped off and I had to get my partner to use some tweezers to remove the rest of the plastic for me in order to be able to use the scales.
The scales are very easy to use, you simply put them on steady, flat ground (there are special feet included for use on carpeted surfaces) and then you tap your foot in the middle of the scales. A symbol like an 8 will travel across the screen and as soon as it goes to zero you may step on to the scales to be weighed. Once your weight has stopped and you have seen your reading you simply step off again where you weight will be displayed for just a few seconds before disappearing.
The scales can be shown in stones, pounds or kilos and this is easily changed by opening the battery compartment on the back and moving a switch up or down depending on how you want the weight to be displayed. The maximum weight is 180kg/28st 8lb which is very reasonable.
The style of these scales is quite modern. There is a flat glass top with four metal pieces which then have bars running down from them. This is all underneath the scale and you can touch it all if you turn the scales over although I'm not sure why you'd want to?! I think the design of these scales is fantastic and they look very sleek and elegant sitting in my bathroom corner. Also, the scales are thin enough to be tucked before a basin or anywhere else in the bathroom really.
The scales are easy to use, easy to set up and easy to store. There is a 15 year guarantee with these scales which covers everything except batteries but you'd need to prove that any faults were due to poor workmanship which would probably be quite hard to do but I don't anticipate having any problems with these anyway. It's worth mentioning that these scales should not be submerged in water and therefore it's probably best to store them away from the bath.
I have been very pleased with the quality of these scales and they even display your weight to the nearest 1/4lb which is fantastic when I am trying to watch my weight and having a slow weight as providing I weigh myself at the same day & time I can at least console myself with having lost half a pound which helps to keep the motivation going.
