LAGUNA for Women EAU DE TOILETTE SPRAY 3.4 oz (100 ML) Launched by the design house of more
Salvador Dali in 1991, LAGUNA PERFUME is classified as a refreshing, oriental, floral fragrance. This feminine scent possesses a blend of light florals and soft exotic fresh oriental spices. It is recommended for daytime wear.
I'm a fan of Dali's art and perfumes so when the two come together, it's more than one can wish for. I have a rare, original 50ml 1990's bottle in my collection together with a new 8ml pen edition of the fragrance and a one I'm using occasionally. Although not well known, Laguna has been around since its 1991 launch and in my opinion, proved to be a timeless, unusual fragrance that hadn't probably earned as much respect as it deserved.
The bottle
This great collectible item comes in vitrous turquoise coloured lip-formed glass bottle and nose-shaped lid. Dali himself designed the bottle of the first 'Salvador Dali' fragrance based on his own painting 'Apparition of the Face of Aphrodite of Knidos'. It has a small calligraphic signature that says 'Dali' on the front of the bottle on the right. The pen is also vitrous turquoise coloured, has a small lip on the end of the clip. The lid is made of plastic.
The fragrance
Top notes: lemon, pineapple, plum, galbanum, mandarin, peach, grapefruit, raspberry
This perfume is a very-well composed, long-lasting scent that produces the same suprisingly strong notes hour after hour despite being an eau de toilette. It achieves this by its complex notes that create a truly unusual experience that very little fruity-floral fragrances have managed to achieve.
Upon the first spray on my skin, I get an invigorating, fresh, citrusy mist that turns into a sweet, nose-tickling rush of indistinguisable ripe fruit. A few minutes later out of this fruity syrup a distinct sea-side aroma emerges, that gives it a tropical, slightly dry and spicy edge. This phase lasts for about half an hour before the floral-aquatic side of the fragrance appears.
I often mistake heavier floral and spicy notes for the smell of a wet patch of sand on the seaside and warm breeze when they are blended very well. The theme for me is definitely sumptious and floral, though the underlying spices of amber and woody patchouli give Laguna an unmistakeable 'rough' oceanic edge.
Some of the aquatic feel subdued after about an hour and a half during leaving a more characteristic oriental-spicy bouquet with a hint of soft musk and woody cedar with the floral theme still going strong. I was really surprised by it's tenacity and that the notes didn't change in character only faded slightly. Warmer, softer but subtler, it turned into an exotic floriental without being heavy or powdery. I didn't pick up any heavy vanilla or sandalwood notes but the somewhat sharper tones of musk, amber and woods, but this could depend on skin type and weather. Laguna then stayed on till about 6 - 8 hours the notes gradually disappearing.
Conclusion
Laguna is an uplifting, modern, complex but light and playful fragrance that has stood the test of time. Fresh, fruity and aquatic in a way, it also has a mellow and warm oriental side. Laguna displays its distinct faces while keeping its integrity thanks to its skilfully blended composition that pushes it beyond the usual boundaries most fruity, floral, oriental or aquatic fragrances are confined to. Heartily recommend it to be worn by all age groups and on all occasions.
